The call

Evolve kept its charter but lost the partners, the trust, and the leadership that made the charter worth anything.

Evolve Bank & Trust provides banking services to fintech companies instead of regular customers. It was hard to replace because fintechs trusted it and it had regulatory approval, but that advantage is gone: Mercury, Dave, and Stripe all switched to other banks like Coastal Financial and Column Bank. Now Evolve faces unresolved legal troubles, regulators investigating it, and a potential sale to Coastal Financial. The one thing that could change everything is whether that sale closes and on what terms, since that will determine if Evolve stabilizes as a small bank or keeps shrinking.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI systems are not driving Evolve's decline; the damage comes from compliance failures, a data breach, and a CEO scandal, not automation. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Coastal Financial, Column Bank, Cross River Bank. Mercury, Dave, and Stripe have already left Evolve for these rival BaaS banks, and Coastal is now negotiating to take more of its book. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Its bank charter and FDIC insurance still let fintech partners move client deposits somewhere regulated, keeping it minimally relevant.

Questions people ask
Is Evolve Bank & Trust profitable in 2026?
Evolve's ousted CEO claimed in mid 2026 the bank was on track to become profitable in 2026 (vendor claimed), but the company has been shrinking headcount, losing major fintech partners, and offloading BaaS assets to Coastal Financial since May 2026, casting doubt on that claim.
Why did Mercury and Dave leave Evolve Bank & Trust?
Mercury and Dave both severed ties with Evolve in March 2025, citing regulatory pressure and reputational risk following Evolve's June 2024 Fed cease-and-desist order and the Synapse collapse; Dave moved to Coastal Community Bank.
Who owns Evolve Bank & Trust?
Evolve Bank & Trust is a privately held, wholly owned subsidiary of bank holding company Evolve Bancorp, Inc.; it is not publicly traded, as confirmed in a July 2026 company profile.
Could AI replace Evolve Bank & Trust's compliance functions?
Much of Evolve's back-office AML, KYC and transaction-monitoring work, the exact functions cited as deficient in its June 2024 Fed cease-and-desist order, is highly automatable by AI compliance tools, though its banking charter and FDIC membership remain non-AI-replaceable regulatory assets.
What happened to Evolve Bank & Trust's CEO Bob Hartheimer?
Hartheimer, hired in August 2025 as a regulatory turnaround CEO, was arrested by the FBI in October 2025 on child exploitation charges and fired within 24 hours; he was sentenced to 43 to 51 months in prison, with the DOJ appealing the sentence as too lenient in July 2026.
Is Evolve Bank & Trust selling its BaaS business?
In May 2026, Coastal Financial Corp. (Nasdaq: CCB) disclosed a non-binding term sheet to acquire select Banking-as-a-Service deposits and fintech programs from Evolve, as Evolve continues de-risking a business it once used to manage roughly $10 billion in fintech deposits.
