The call

Evotec still holds real lab and data assets that AI tools cannot replicate, but shrinking revenue, cash burn, and a declining anchor customer put its near-term footing in doubt.

Evotec runs wet labs and data services for pharmaceutical companies developing new drugs. It is hard to copy because it has expensive equipment, trained staff, government certifications, and years of client relationships, but much larger competitors like Charles River and WuXi AppTec have all the same things and are taking market share. AI companies like Recursion and Exscientia are also automating parts of early drug discovery, which is where Evotec makes money. The company is shrinking (revenue down 19 percent), losing money (adjusted EBITDA guidance shows losses of 70 to 105 million euros this year), and its biggest customer is spending less. The real question is whether its August 2026 earnings report shows things are stabilizing or getting worse, because if the decline is permanent rather than temporary, investors may stop believing the company can turn around.

Why
01
AI pressure: Recursion Pharmaceuticals, Exscientia. AI-native platforms chase Evotec's lower-value screening and hit-to-lead work, not its regulated manufacturing or embedded pharma deals. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Charles River Laboratories, WuXi AppTec, Lonza, Samsung Biologics. Larger CROs and CDMOs run the same GMP wet-lab and biologics services Evotec sells, competing on price and capacity. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Regulated GMP/GLP infrastructure, proprietary multi-omics data, and long-running embedded pharma alliances like the BMS partnership.
What would change this call
Audited H1 2026 results released August 13, 2026 confirm or revise the cut FY2026 guidance of 570 to 610 million euros revenue. Shows whether revenue loss is a temporary timing shift or a structural decline in competitive position.
BMS cumulative partnership revenue trajectory through end of 2026 and into 2027 versus the roughly 800 million euro figure. Indicates whether the largest customer relationship is stabilizing or continuing to shrink.
Whether Evotec needs a distressed capital raise or renegotiates the 116 million euro convertible bond before 2027. Would show if cash burn from EBITDA losses is outpacing the Horizon restructuring savings plan.

Questions people ask
Is Evotec profitable in 2026?
No. H1 2026 adjusted EBITDA was about -€42.7m, and after a July 14, 2026 guidance cut, FY2026 adjusted EBITDA guidance is -€70m to -€105m, down from an original 2026 revenue forecast of €700-780m now cut to €570-610m.
Who is Evotec's biggest competitor?
Evotec competes with larger integrated CROs Charles River Laboratories, WuXi AppTec, Labcorp Drug Development, ICON plc and Eurofins Scientific, all offering similar discovery and preclinical services at greater scale as of 2026.
Could AI replace Evotec?
AI is eroding lower-value screening and hit-to-lead chemistry work, but Evotec's regulated GMP/GLP wet-lab execution, proprietary PanOmics data and embedded pharma alliances like BMS provide a moat; it hired its first Head of Global In Silico and AI, Rui Wang, effective June 1, 2026.
Who owns Evotec?
Evotec SE is publicly traded with no controlling parent. As of early 2026 top shareholders included Mubadala Investment Company (about 7-8.3%), activist MAK Capital (7.0%, disclosed March 30, 2026), Novo Holdings, and Vanguard (about 3.35%).
Did Evotec accept a buyout offer?
No. Evotec rejected a roughly $2.1 billion takeover approach from Halozyme Therapeutics in 2024, choosing standalone restructuring; by July 24, 2026 its market cap had fallen to about €615 million versus a €101.35 all-time high.
Why did Evotec cut its 2026 guidance?
On July 14, 2026, Evotec cut FY2026 revenue guidance to €570-610m from €700-780m, citing timing shifts of partnership milestones into 2027 rather than lost business, alongside a 19% H1 revenue decline to €300.1m.
