The call

eXp still leads on agent count and transaction sides, but its recruiting growth has flattened while Compass and same-model rival Real Brokerage both press in from different directions.

eXp Realty is an online real estate brokerage that lets agents work from home and keeps most of their commissions, without the expensive office buildings that traditional brokers require. This model is now easy for others to copy, and companies like The Real Brokerage and LPT Realty are doing exactly that and growing faster than eXp, whose agent count has basically stopped growing at only 1 percent per year. If eXp cannot start recruiting more agents again while lawsuits drag on and profits stay paper-thin, it will fade as a market leader within the next few years.

Why
01
AI pressure: Zillow's AI-powered search and agent-matching tools. AI tools that match buyers to listings and agents directly could shrink the role eXp's 82,000 agents play in each deal. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Compass International Holdings. After absorbing Anywhere Real Estate in Jan 2026, Compass now holds about 29% of transaction sides and 39% of sales volume nationally. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Revenue-share and stock-equity pay structure locks agents in, and legacy brokerages can't copy it without blowing up their own office and franchise economics.

Questions people ask
Is eXp Realty profitable in 2026?
eXp World Holdings (now AGNT Inc) posted a Q1 2026 operating loss of $8.8 million, though adjusted EBITDA was positive at $4.1 million, up 88% YoY, as of May 11, 2026. FY2026 guidance targets adjusted EBITDA of $50 million to $75 million on $4.85B to $5.15B revenue.
Could AI replace eXp Realty agents?
AI tools like Mira (launched October 21, 2025) and Doc AI automate back-office tasks such as commission lookups and document review, but a licensed human broker remains legally required in every transaction, so AI is feeding margins rather than replacing the core brokerage function as of mid 2026.
Who is eXp Realty's biggest competitor?
Compass International Holdings leads after absorbing Anywhere Real Estate on January 9, 2026, holding about 29% of transaction sides and 39% of sales volume nationally. Among same-model cloud brokerages, The Real Brokerage is closing the gap on eXp as of May 14, 2026.
Did eXp Realty change its name?
Yes. eXp World Holdings completed a corporate transformation to AGNT, Inc. on June 11, 2026, redomesticating from Delaware to Texas and switching its Nasdaq ticker from EXPI to AGNT after acquiring franchise brand NextHome in May 2026.
Is eXp Realty's agent growth still strong?
No, it has plateaued. Agent and broker count was 82,332 as of March 31, 2026, up only about 1% year over year, after ending FY2025 with 83,060 agents worldwide, signaling the recruiting flywheel has stalled compared to prior hypergrowth years.
Is eXp Realty facing lawsuits?
Yes. A federal court denied eXp's motion to dismiss fraud claims in a sexual misconduct case on April 7, 2026, and a Delaware Court of Chancery ruling on January 16, 2026 allowed a shareholder derivative suit over alleged rape culture to proceed against the board.
