Expected Parrot
Open-source toolkit (EDSL) for running AI-agent surveys and simulating customer responses.
A five-person open-source tool sits between frontier model providers and a well-funded incumbent, with no data or workflow of its own to hold ground.
Expected Parrot takes the large language models made by OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic and uses them to generate artificial people who answer surveys. The problem is that Qualtrics, the dominant player in real surveys, has already shipped its own version backed by 200 million actual survey responses and has spent billions buying up competitors. Expected Parrot doesn't own any of the AI models it relies on, doesn't own any survey data, and can't lock customers into its product. The one thing that could change everything is if enterprise companies start proving that fake survey respondents give systematically biased answers that don't match what real people do. If that proof becomes public and widespread in the second half of 2026, major buyers may stop trusting any synthetic respondents at all, leaving only Qualtrics standing because it still has real human data.
OpenAI, Google, or Anthropic ship a native persona-simulation or agent-survey tool. Would show frontier labs absorbing the layer Expected Parrot occupies.
Expected Parrot announces a named enterprise customer or a Series A round. Would show real paid adoption rather than early-stage tooling with no traction.
- $500,000 total disclosed funding
- 5-person team
- Qualtrics paid $6.75B for Forsta
- No proprietary data moat versus Qualtrics's 200M+ respondent base.
- Category-wide credibility attack on synthetic respondent validity, ACM and NN/g reports 2026.
- Core value-add is a thin layer atop third-party LLMs the company does not control.
- Tiny team of 5 and only $500,000 raised against well-funded rivals.
- No disclosed revenue or named enterprise customers as of late 2025.
| Rival | Direction | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Qualtrics | losing to | Shipped Edge synthetic panels on 200M+ respondents plus $6.75B Forsta acquisition, March-May 2026 |
| Synthetic Users | losing to | Backed by Comcast NBCUniversal, reported Gartner leader in synthetic respondents as of May 2026 |
| Evidenza | losing to | Signed global partnership with Dentsu, reported May 2026 |
| YouGov | contesting | Acquired rival synthetic-respondent tool Yabble for £4.5M in 2026 |
| Aaru | losing to | Reportedly closing Series A near billion-dollar valuation, vendor-claimed, per May 2026 report |
- Is Expected Parrot profitable?
- No revenue, customer counts, or enterprise logos are publicly disclosed for Expected Parrot as of its November 2025 YC launch. It runs a freemium model with $25 in free LLM API credits, consistent with a pre-seed company still building traction rather than generating disclosed profit.
- How much funding has Expected Parrot raised?
- Expected Parrot has raised $500,000 total across 2 to 3 rounds as of December 17, 2025, per CB Insights, from investors including Y Combinator, Bloomberg Beta, Pioneer Fund, gumi, and Rebel Fund.
- Who is Expected Parrot's biggest competitor?
- Qualtrics is the biggest threat: it launched Qualtrics Edge synthetic panels in March 2026 built on over 200 million historical respondents, then completed a $6.75 billion acquisition of Press Ganey Forsta in May 2026, dwarfing Expected Parrot's five-person team and $500,000 raised.
- Could AI replace what Expected Parrot does?
- Expected Parrot's product is itself an orchestration layer atop frontier LLMs like OpenAI and Google models, not a proprietary dataset. If those labs or Qualtrics ship native persona-simulation features, Expected Parrot's core value-add could be absorbed since it doesn't own the underlying model.
- Does Expected Parrot have any proprietary data moat?
- No. Expected Parrot's EDSL package is open-source under MIT license on GitHub, with no disclosed proprietary respondent dataset, unlike Qualtrics which built its Edge synthetic panels on over 200 million historical respondents as of March 2026.
- What is Expected Parrot's main product?
- Expected Parrot builds EDSL, an open-source Python package for running surveys and experiments with AI agent personas across multiple LLMs, plus Coop, a hosted platform for caching, sharing, and reproducing those AI-based surveys. The latest EDSL version, 1.0.8, was published on PyPI on May 8, 2026.
