The call

Expleo keeps a foothold in certified aerospace work with Airbus while its larger, cheaper rivals and AI tools squeeze the generic testing business that still makes up most of its revenue.

Expleo is a 1.4 billion euro company that tests software, checks quality, and provides engineering advice for companies, especially in aerospace and defense. The aerospace and defense work is genuinely hard for others to copy because those industries have strict rules and require special certifications, but most of Expleo's money comes from routine software testing and hiring out engineers, which AI tools can now do faster and cheaper than Expleo's people can. The company is already shrinking, has new leadership trying to fix things, and its owner is trying to sell it, so what matters most is whether Expleo can shift its business toward the harder, certified work before AI tools or larger competitors like Capgemini or Cognizant squeeze out the routine testing jobs that keep the lights on.

Why
01
AI pressure: Generative AI test-generation and agentic QA tools (e.g. from vendors like Functionize, Testim, or in-house LLM pipelines). AI-driven test generation and defect prediction automate the billable testing hours Expleo's staff-aug model depends on. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: Capgemini Engineering, Cognizant, Sopra Steria, Alten, AtkinsRealis. Rivals 2 to 10 times larger chase the same generic testing and staff-aug contracts with no special barrier stopping them. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Regulated aerospace and defence work with Airbus needs certification and trust that generic AI tools or smaller rivals cannot easily replicate.
What would change this call
Ardian confirms or abandons a sale/change-of-control of Expleo. Shows whether ownership uncertainty resolves or drags on, affecting strategic focus.
Next earnings/headcount report shows headcount and revenue stabilizing or continuing to fall. Tests whether AI-driven compression of testing/QA work is accelerating or leveling off.
Expleo reports growth in certified aerospace/defence/life-sciences engineering share of revenue mix. Would show a real pivot toward its regulated moat instead of generic, automatable testing work.

Questions people ask
Is Expleo Group profitable and growing in 2026?
Expleo's own 2025 Sustainability Report describes 2025 revenue growth as stagnant, with sustainable-business-activity share flat at 25.42% versus 25.76% in 2024. Group revenue is cited at roughly 1.4 billion euros, but no profit figures are disclosed publicly as of early 2026.
Who owns Expleo Group and is it being sold?
French private equity firm Ardian has controlled Expleo since acquiring it from Assystem on 11 May 2017. Reports from mid-2024 say Ardian hired Rothschild to explore a sale; as of the latest data no confirmed change of control has closed.
Is Expleo Group laying off staff?
Independent trackers show declining headcount: Revelio Labs recorded 15,922 employees in December 2025, down 8.2% from 17,283 in 2024, while Crustdata shows a drop to 14,041 by June 2026, a 3% year on year decline.
Could AI replace Expleo Group's testing and QA business?
NelsonHall's May 2026 NEAT evaluation named Expleo a Leader in Quality Engineering and GenAI Use Case Capability but also flagged the market moving toward end-to-end AI automation via agentic workflows, a trend that directly threatens Expleo's labour-intensive testing and staff-augmentation revenue.
Who are Expleo Group's main competitors?
PitchBook lists The North Highland Company, Alvarez & Marsal, SEGULA Technologies, Alten, and Thakral One as direct competitors as of mid-2026. Cognizant also earned a 2025 NelsonHall Quality Engineering Leader title, showing direct overlap with Expleo's core service.
How big is Expleo Group compared to rivals like AtkinsRéalis?
Revelio Labs data from December 2025 ranks Expleo around 7th by headcount among tracked engineering and construction services peers, with about 15,900 employees versus AtkinsRéalis's 32,525 and Worley's 44,358, making it subscale relative to larger rivals.
