The call

FANUC is bolting NVIDIA's AI onto its own robots while watching SoftBank's ABB purchase for a rival that could ship an AI native machine, but that rival has not won a single factory contract yet.

FANUC builds the robots that automate car factories and manufacturing plants around the world. It is hard to replace because factories have spent decades training workers on FANUC machines, buying spare parts from FANUC, and connecting FANUC robots to their assembly lines, so switching to a different robot company would be expensive and disruptive. The main threat is SoftBank's purchase of ABB Robotics, a major competitor, which could create a company that combines ABB's customer relationships with SoftBank's artificial intelligence resources and money to challenge FANUC's dominance starting in late 2026 or 2027.

Why
01
AI pressure: NVIDIA (Jetson, Isaac Sim, GR00T). FANUC is folding NVIDIA's models into its own robots, using AI to make its arms smarter rather than getting replaced by them. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: SoftBank owned ABB Robotics. SoftBank's ABB Robotics deal (announced Oct 2025, financing closed July 2026) could fund an AI-native rival, but it has not shipped a product or won a plant contract yet. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Fifty years of proprietary CNC and servo control tech plus a huge installed base of factories that would be costly to rip out and replace.
What would change this call
SoftBank/ABB Robotics deal formally closes and platform ships (expected late 2026). Would create the first credible AI-native rival scaled to challenge FANUC.
A named Tier-1 automotive or electronics OEM awards a new greenfield line to SoftBank/ABB over FANUC. Would show FANUC losing default OEM contracts, not just facing new competition.
FANUC quarterly results show margin compression or guidance cuts tied to US Section 301 tariffs (10-12.5%, effective July 2026). Would show tariff costs forcing pricing or volume concessions.
Key numbers
  • FY2025 sales ¥857.83B, up 7.62% YoY (2026-03-31)
  • Operating margin 19.3% (9 months to Dec 2025) (2025-12-31)
  • Over 1 million robots shipped cumulatively (2023)
Named risks
  • SoftBank-owned ABB Robotics could ship AI-native platform and win Tier-1 OEM contracts once deal closes. Severity: high
  • New US tariffs of 10-12.5% effective July 24, 2026 could compress margins on US-bound exports. Severity: medium
  • China and Asia demand cyclicality affecting cobot and CNC sales recovery timing. Severity: medium
  • Yen exchange rate fluctuations affecting reported unrealized profit and earnings comparability. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is FANUC profitable in 2026?
Yes. FANUC's FY2025 nine-month operating margin (through December 31, 2025) was 19.3%, and full FY2025 consolidated net sales (fiscal year ended March 31, 2026) reached ¥857.83 billion, up 7.62% year-over-year, per company financial disclosures.
Could AI replace FANUC's robots?
Unlikely soon. FANUC is integrating NVIDIA's Jetson, Isaac Sim, Omniverse and GR00T models into its own ROBOGUIDE software and controllers (announced March 2026, demoed May 2026) as an added feature, not a substitute for its proprietary CNC/servo hardware and installed base of over 1 million robots.
Who is FANUC's biggest competitor?
ABB has been FANUC's closest rival, but in October 2025 SoftBank agreed to buy ABB's Robotics division for $5.375 billion; SoftBank finalized $1.75 billion in financing in July 2026, with the deal expected to close later in 2026, potentially creating a well-funded AI-native competitor.
Is FANUC laying off employees?
No mass layoffs reported. FANUC's parent company had 10,040 employees as of March 31, 2026, down just 73 (-0.72%) from the prior year, while FANUC America has added over 700 new U.S. jobs since 2019 tied to facility expansion.
Is FANUC a safe company to join?
By most indicators yes: FANUC is a profitable, independent Tokyo Stock Exchange listed company (ticker 6954) with a market cap of roughly ¥6.41 trillion as of July 23, 2026, over a million robots shipped historically, and active hiring including a $90 million Michigan facility investment announced March 24, 2026.
Who owns FANUC Corporation?
FANUC is an independent publicly traded Japanese company with no parent, listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime Market under ticker 6954, and also traded as an ADR (FANUY) and in Frankfurt (FUC). Kenji Yamaguchi has served as President and CEO since April 2019, reconfirmed June 25, 2026.
