The call

FAW's state ownership and Hongqi's ceremonial role secure the company's survival while its mass-market and software position keep losing ground to BYD, Geely, and Leapmotor.

FAW Group is a 73-year-old Chinese government-owned car company that makes about 3.3 million vehicles per year, including the Hongqi brand that serves as China's official state car. The company is hard to shut down because it is owned directly by the Chinese government, but it is losing ground in the fast-growing electric car market to rivals like BYD and Geely, which are better at the software and AI that modern cars need. The biggest unknown is whether the Chinese government will reorganize or merge FAW with other state-owned carmakers in the next year or two, and whether FAW's partnership with Leapmotor (a software company it bought a stake in) can actually help it compete in electric cars or is just a way to hide the problem.

Why
01
AI pressure: BYD and Geely in-house smart-driving and AI software stacks. Rivals already ship their own AI driving software in mass-market EVs while FAW leans on a 5% stake in Leapmotor for that layer. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: BYD and Geely. BYD and Geely undercut FAW's mass-market brands like Bestune on price and volume in China's EV price war. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Full SASAC ownership and Hongqi's role as China's ceremonial state car give it protected demand no rival can bid for.
What would change this call
SASAC names FAW as absorbed party versus core survivor in state auto restructuring. Shows whether FAW keeps independent identity or is folded into another SOE.
Leapmotor-co-developed Hongqi model reaches mass production in H2 2026. Tests whether outsourcing software/AI to Leapmotor actually closes FAW's tech gap.
FAW-Jiefang Q2 2026 earnings released 29 Aug 2026. Shows whether truck unit's Q1 profit rebound holds or price war losses resume.

Named risks
  • SASAC could name FAW the absorbed party in a forced state auto sector merger. Severity: high

  • Core NEV software/AI capability is rented from Leapmotor rather than owned in-house. Severity: medium
  • Overseas RHD EV rollout (Thailand, Hong Kong) faces execution and demand uncertainty through 2026-2029. Severity: medium
  • Flying car and solid-state battery bets remain unproven, with mass production years away. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is FAW Group profitable in 2026?
FAW-Jiefang, the group's listed truck arm, posted Q1 2026 net profit up 241.82% year over year on revenue of RMB18.78 billion, but H1 2025 profit had crashed 96% y/y amid a price war, showing volatile rather than steady profitability.
Who owns FAW Group?
FAW Group is wholly state-owned, 100% controlled by China's SASAC (State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission), a central government body, as confirmed as of July 2026, making it one of China's Big Four state automakers.
Could AI replace FAW Group's engineers?
Rather than risk replacement, FAW bought in AI capability: in December 2025 it paid roughly $530 million for a 5% stake in Leapmotor specifically to acquire smart-EV software and intelligent-driving tech it lacked internally.
Is BYD FAW Group's biggest competitor?
Yes, alongside Geely. Both are outselling FAW in China's NEV segment as of 2025-2026, prompting FAW to invest in Leapmotor in December 2025 to catch up on electrification and software rather than compete head-on.
Will FAW Group be merged with Dongfeng or Changan?
SASAC signaled plans in March 2025 to consolidate state automakers including FAW and Dongfeng, and already separated Changan into its own central SOE in July 2025, leaving FAW's restructuring fate still undecided as of mid 2026.
Is Hongqi, FAW's luxury brand, doing well?
Yes, Hongqi sold 446,537 vehicles in 2025, its best year ever as reported April 28, 2026, and is expanding internationally with a Thailand launch in June 2026 and a Hong Kong debut planned for Q4 2026.
