The call

FDM's recruit-train-deploy model is being hollowed out from both sides, by banks building their own academies and by AI doing the junior work it once supplied.

FDM Group hires people, trains them in basic IT skills like testing and coding, and then rents them to banks and financial firms. The company is shrinking because two things are happening at once: the banks FDM sells to are now training their own people in-house instead of buying from FDM, and AI tools like ChatGPT and Claude can now do the exact work that FDM's junior staff used to do, so clients need fewer people altogether. The one thing that could save FDM is if it quickly becomes good at using AI itself to make its consultants more valuable, but there is no sign that is working yet.

Why
01
AI pressure: Generative AI coding and QA tools like GitHub Copilot, Claude, and Cursor. AI now does the junior testing, QA, and basic dev work FDM consultants are trained to do, shrinking client demand for placements. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: JPMorgan, Barclays in-house graduate academies; Accenism-scale rivals Accenture, Cognizant, Deloitte. Banks are building their own graduate pipelines instead of paying FDM, while larger IT services firms run the same model at bigger scale. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. None apparent: training infrastructure is a cost, not a barrier, and its client contracts are shrinking, not locking anyone in.
What would change this call
H1 2026 results on 3 August 2026 show consultant headcount vs 1,961 (April 2026). Stabilization would ease disintermediation fears; further decline confirms shrinking demand.
Whether a distinct AI-services or governance revenue line appears and grows in H1/H2 2026. Would show FDM pivoting into higher-margin, defensible work rather than pure staffing.
Cash balance level at year-end 2026 versus ~£30m in April 2026. Falling below £25m would sharply narrow strategic options and dividend capacity.
