The call

Figma's growth and retention numbers still look strong even as Google and Anthropic push AI design tools into its territory.

Figma makes cloud-based design software that teams use to create websites, apps, and graphics together in real time. It is hard to replace because once a company's entire design workflow runs on Figma, switching to a competitor like Adobe or new AI tools from Google and Anthropic costs time and money. The one thing that could change everything is if Google Stitch or Claude Design actually convince Figma's customers to leave by being faster, cheaper, or built specifically for AI-powered design work, which will show up first in the company's customer retention numbers later this year.

Why
01
AI pressure: Google Stitch and Anthropic Claude Design. Both let people generate and edit interfaces from prompts, aiming at the mockup step Figma has owned for years. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Google (Stitch, backed by Gemini). Google can bundle Stitch into Workspace and Gemini for free, pressuring Figma's pricing even if quality lags. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Deep workflow lock-in: design files, dev handoff, plugins, and now an MCP server that ties Figma into AI coding tools rather than replacing it.

Questions people ask
Is Figma profitable in 2026?
Not on a GAAP basis yet. Figma's Q4 2025 GAAP operating margin was -64%, though non-GAAP operating margin hit 14%. FY2026 guidance (May 14, 2026) projects non-GAAP operating income of $125-135M on $1.422-1.428B revenue, but full GAAP profitability has not been reported.
Could AI replace Figma?
AI-native tools like Google Stitch (launched March 18, 2026) and Anthropic's Claude Design (~April 2026) directly target Figma's prompt-to-design workflow and drove its stock down 44-52% in H1 2026, but Figma's Q1 2026 revenue still grew 46% YoY with net dollar retention at 139%, showing no customer defection yet.
Who owns Figma and is it public?
