The call

Fnac Darty survives on thin margins and service subscriptions while Amazon and AI shopping tools chip away at price-sensitive buyers, with its next owner deciding which way it tips.

Fnac Darty sells electronics, appliances, and books across France with 2% profit margins and about 10 billion euros in yearly sales. It is hard to replace because it owns repair shops and installation networks that Amazon cannot easily copy, but it is under constant attack from Amazon.fr and shopping apps that find the cheapest prices automatically. The key question is whether the new owner will invest in building a service-and-convenience platform or simply cut costs to squeeze out profit, which will decide if the company grows or slowly shrinks.

Why
01
AI pressure: AI shopping agents and agentic commerce tools. Agentic shopping already drives about 3% of French GMV and tends to route buyers to the cheapest, fastest seller, not Fnac. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Amazon.fr. Amazon competes directly in electronics and appliances with lower prices and faster delivery in many cases. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Repair and installation services, Darty Max subscriptions nearing 2.4 million users, and French book price rules that block deep discounting.
What would change this call
Fnac Darty operating margin stays at or below 2.0% through FY2026 results. Would show pricing/competitive pressure from Amazon and discounters is capping profitability.
Darty Max subscribers fall short of pace toward 4M target by 2030 in upcoming results. Would show the service/repair moat is not converting into durable customer lock-in.
EP Group's post-tender plan (H2 2026) cuts France headcount faster than the current ~5% annual rate. Would show new ownership favors cost-cutting over investing in the service network that differentiates Fnac Darty.
