The call

Fort's core pitch already runs inside Whoop's app for free, leaving a three-person, unshipped startup racing a feature the leader shipped first.

Fort is building a wristband that watches your arm movements to count weightlifting reps and tell you when you are close to muscle failure. The problem is that Whoop, a much larger company with millions of existing customers, just released the same feature for free to everyone who already subscribes to their band. Whoop has the same business model as Fort (a wristband plus a monthly fee), so there is no reason for them to avoid competing directly. Fort has almost no money ($500K) and three employees, while Whoop, Garmin, and Apple all have enormous resources and already know how to track body motion. The only thing that could save Fort's chances is if independent tests prove its accuracy is genuinely better than what competitors offer, or if the company gets acquired by someone who needs this technology fast.

Why
01
AI pressure: Whoop (Passive MSK on-device ML). Whoop already ships free wrist-based ML that estimates muscle load and reps, the same job Fort's hardware hasn't shipped yet. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: Garmin (rumored CIRQA workout detection). Garmin is rumored to be adding stronger auto workout detection to its existing watch base, another path into Fort's exact niche. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. A capped 1,000-unit preorder sellout shows some lifters want a dedicated strength-only band, but this is unverified and easy for Whoop to copy.
What would change this call
Independent test compares Fort's bar-velocity/RIR accuracy to barbell-mounted sensors like Vitruve after shipment. Shows whether Fort's core accuracy claim holds up or collapses under scrutiny.
Fort's shipping date slips again past Q2 2027. Indicates execution trouble and widens Whoop's head start further.
Fort announces a Series A or an acquisition within the next six months. Shows whether Fort secures runway to compete or exits via acquihire.

Questions people ask
Is Fort profitable in 2026?
No. Fort has no disclosed revenue and had not shipped hardware as of July 2026, still selling preorders. Its only disclosed capital is roughly $500K seed funding dated February 19, 2026, per Caplight, with a team of 3 employees as of July 21, 2026.
Could AI replace what Fort is building?
Largely already has. Whoop shipped 'Passive MSK,' a free on-device ML software update that auto-estimates musculoskeletal load from wrist motion, on February 28, 2026, months before Fort shipped any hardware, directly matching Fort's core pitch.
Who is Fort's biggest competitor?
Whoop. It offers the same screenless-band-plus-subscription model and shipped a competing AI feature (Passive MSK, Feb 28, 2026, and an AI Strength Trainer update, May 22, 2026) to its existing subscriber base before Fort delivered any units.
Is Fort's shipping timeline reliable?
Uncertain. February 2026 reporting cited a Q3 2026 ship date, but July 25, 2026 reporting from The Gadgeteer cites a Q2 2027 preorder/shipping commitment, a roughly nine-month slip flagged as a discrepancy across sources.
How much funding has Fort raised?
About $500,000, dated February 19, 2026 per Caplight, with investors including Y Combinator, Afore Capital, Weekend Fund, Theory Forge Ventures, Banana Capital, XSLA Ventures, and angels reportedly tied to OpenAI and Tesla. No valuation has been disclosed.
Has Fort's bar-velocity and failure-proximity tracking been independently verified?
No. As of the February 19, 2026 reporting, no third-party accuracy testing of Fort's bar-velocity or proximity-to-failure claims exists; reviewers note this validation is pending until after hardware ships.
