The call

Forum is racing to build the product Polymarket already launched, still trading with fake money while the incumbent trades billions in real volume.

Forum lets people bet on future events through contracts, like Polymarket does. But Polymarket launched the exact same product first in March 2026, has 7.66 billion dollars in monthly volume, official government approval as a regulated exchange, and way more customers, all things that make it nearly impossible for Forum to catch up. The one thing that could matter is if the government creates special rules for prediction markets that let smaller or business-focused platforms operate differently, or if Forum gets its own regulatory approval before Polymarket becomes completely unbeatable.

Why
01
AI pressure: Frontier LLMs / AI trading agents. AI agents already trade on Forum's API, and frontier models could build attention indexes themselves, cutting out the exchange layer. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: Polymarket (Kalshi secondary). Polymarket launched its own Attention Markets in March 2026 with $7.66B monthly volume and regained CFTC DCM status in Dec 2025. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. None secured yet: Forum has no live real-money product, no CFTC registration, and no volume to compare against Polymarket's.
What would change this call
Forum obtains (or fails to obtain) CFTC DCM/SEF registration by end of 2026. Shows whether Forum can legally operate before Polymarket locks up the market.
Polymarket reports scaling attention contracts to 'thousands' by end-2026 as planned. Confirms the incumbent is executing on the same thesis at much larger scale.
Forum announces a pivot to B2B/enterprise hedging or any real-money trading launch. Would show Forum seeking a niche away from direct incumbent collision.

  • Sector-wide political and legal turbulence over event contracts, including state gambling disputes and a Senate trading ban in May 2026. Severity: medium
  • Core attention-index signal generation is commoditizable by AI agents already trading on Forum's own API. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Forum profitable in 2026?
No. Forum is pre-revenue as of June 2026, still running a paper-trading phase where new accounts get $1,000 in simulated capital while it awaits CFTC clearance to launch real-money trading, per a June 21, 2026 report.
Could AI replace Forum's core product?
Partly. Forum's attention-index construction from search, social, and streaming data is exactly the kind of signal-scoring task AI agents already automate; third-party developers were running autonomous trading bots against Forum's live API by April 2026.
Who owns Forum, the attention exchange startup?
Forum is a private company backed by Y Combinator's Winter 2026 batch, run by two co-founders, Owen Botkin and Joseph Thomas, with no priced funding round or valuation publicly disclosed as of June 2026.
Is Polymarket Forum's biggest competitor?
Yes. Polymarket launched its own 'Attention Markets' product in March 2026, the same concept as Forum's, backed by roughly $7.66 billion in monthly trading volume as of January 2026, dwarfing Forum's two-person, pre-launch team.
Has Forum launched real-money trading yet?
No. As of June 21, 2026, Forum's real-money exchange had not launched; it operates a $1,000 virtual-capital paper-trading product while pursuing CFTC Designated Contract Market or Swap Execution Facility status.
What is Forum's actual moat, if any?
Third-party analysis from June 21, 2026 concludes Forum's data-ingestion technology is replicable and its real moat, if it materializes, is CFTC regulatory registration, which it had not yet secured as of that date.
