The call

FourKites still holds a real carrier network and integration base, but it is losing ground to project44 while its funding and headcount trends move the wrong way.

FourKites sells software that helps shipping companies see where their packages are in real time by connecting to thousands of trucking companies and warehouse systems. It has built something hard to copy: over 1.1 million carrier connections and tight links to the software companies use to run their warehouses and trucks. However, project44 is beating it in customer satisfaction and market standing, and FourKites has lost half its value since 2022 while cutting its workforce by nearly a quarter. The company could turn things around if it raises new money and wins back Gartner's confidence by early 2027, but right now it is being outrun by a stronger competitor, not replaced by artificial intelligence.

Why
01
AI pressure: project44's AI-driven predictive ETA and risk models. Gartner has ranked project44 above FourKites on execution and vision three straight years, largely on AI/ML prediction quality. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Descartes Systems and Trimble (roll-up acquirers). Both companies buy logistics tech to bundle into larger suites, a path that could absorb a weakened FourKites later. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. 1.1M+ carrier connections and deep ERP/TMS/WMS integrations that took years to build and are costly to rip out.

Questions people ask
Is FourKites profitable in 2026?
No audited figures are public. Revenue estimates conflict wildly, from $65M (2021, CB Insights) to a modeled ~$292M (2025, Sacra) to $115.5M (ZoomInfo, undated). No company-disclosed profitability data exists as of July 2026.
Is FourKites losing to project44?
Yes. Gartner's 2025 Magic Quadrant for Real-Time Transportation Visibility Platforms placed project44 highest on both execution and vision axes for the third consecutive year, ahead of FourKites, as of February 27, 2025.
Has FourKites had layoffs?
Yes. FourKites confirmed a 15% global workforce cut in December 2023, following an 8% (60-person) layoff in August 2022. Headcount fell from 718 in 2023 to 548 by December 2025, a 23.6% cumulative decline.
Could AI replace FourKites?
FourKites' own CEO called passive tracking and ETA prediction 'table stakes' in March 2026, and the company has automated scheduling and tracking with its own AI agents (Tracy, Sam, Alan). Its 1.1M+ carrier network and ERP integrations remain harder to replicate.
Who owns FourKites?
FourKites is privately held and venture-backed, with no parent company. Investors include Thomas H. Lee Partners, Bain Capital Ventures, Qualcomm Ventures, Zebra Ventures, Volvo Group Venture Capital and Mitsui & Co., per 2026 investor data.
Is FourKites still worth $1 billion?
No. FourKites hit unicorn status at a $1B valuation after a $30M plus $10M Series D extension in August-September 2022, but secondary-market trackers estimated its implied valuation at roughly $500M as of July 2026, a 50% haircut.
