The call

FPT Smart Cloud profits from a law that keeps AWS, Azure and Google out of Vietnam's data centers, but those same rivals already sell most of the country's cloud, and a live security finding tests whether FPT's sovereignty pitch holds up.

FPT Smart Cloud rents computing power and data storage to customers inside Vietnam, owned by a large Vietnamese company. It is hard to replace because Vietnam's government requires certain data to stay in the country, and big cloud companies like Amazon Web Services and Microsoft cannot easily build data centers there, so FPT has less competition than it would otherwise. However, a security test in April 2026 found that customers using FPT's GPU computers could see each other's network activity, which is a serious problem for a company that sells itself as safe for government and regulated businesses, and big cloud companies already serve most of Vietnam anyway by sending data across borders. The biggest thing to watch is whether FPT publicly fixes the security problem and explains what went wrong in the next six months, because if they stay quiet or defensive, large companies will probably stop buying from them.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. FPT sells the GPU cloud and data centers AI runs on, so more AI demand fills their racks rather than replacing them. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud. Vietnam's data-localization law blocks hyperscaler data centers in-country, yet AWS, Azure and Google already hold about 78% of Vietnam's cloud market via edge and cross-border delivery. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Vietnam's data-localization law and the absence of in-country hyperscaler data centers, a protection shared with four other domestic operators, not unique to FPT.
What would change this call
AWS, Azure or Google Cloud announce an in-country Vietnam data center. Would erase the legal moat protecting FPT and domestic rivals.
FPT publishes a remediation postmortem for the April 2026 ClusterMAX GPU network-isolation findings within two quarters. Shows whether the sovereignty-security credibility gap is being closed or left open.
Viettel or another domestic rival wins a major sovereign-AI or government cloud contract over FPT. Would show FPT losing share within the protected domestic pool, not just to hyperscalers.
Key numbers
  • FPT Corp FY2025 revenue $2.8B, up 11.6% YoY (2026-01-26)
  • AI/Data Analytics segment grew 41% YoY in 2025 (2026-04-06)
  • Hyperscalers hold ~78% of Vietnam's cloud market (2026)
Named risks
  • Independently verified GPU cloud network-isolation vulnerability found by ClusterMAX in April 2026, unremediated status unclear. Severity: high
  • Hyperscalers already hold ~78% of Vietnam cloud spend despite data-localization law, eroding domestic incumbent advantage. Severity: medium
  • New Personal Data Protection Law (No. 91/2025/QH15) and Decree 356/2025/ND-CP could raise compliance costs. Severity: medium
  • Capital-scale gap versus regional sovereign-AI rivals like NAVER's $10B buildout limits competitive investment capacity. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is FPT Smart Cloud profitable?
FPT Smart Cloud does not report standalone financials, but its parent FPT Corporation posted FY2025 pre-tax profit of VND 13,039 billion, up 17.8% year over year, on revenue of VND 70,113 billion (~$2.8B), as of January 26, 2026.
Who owns FPT Smart Cloud?
FPT Smart Cloud is a wholly-owned subsidiary of FPT Corporation, Vietnam's largest listed IT conglomerate (ticker FPT, market cap roughly VND 107 trillion as of July 26, 2026). It has not raised independent funding as a standalone entity.
Could AI replace FPT Smart Cloud's business?
Unlikely to be replaced outright: FPT Smart Cloud sells GPU infrastructure and deployment services that frontier AI models run on, so demand grows as AI models proliferate. Its generic chatbot and IaaS tooling layer, however, faces commoditization pressure from hyperscalers and open-source providers as of 2026.
Who is FPT Smart Cloud's biggest competitor?
Domestically, FPT Smart Cloud competes with Viettel IDC, VNPT, CMC Telecom, and VNG Cloud, which together with FPT control about 70% of Vietnam's data-center market as of 2025. Internationally, AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud already capture roughly 78% of Vietnam's cloud spend despite lacking in-country data centers.
Is FPT Smart Cloud's GPU cloud secure?
An independent SemiAnalysis ClusterMAX audit published April 19, 2026 found serious network-isolation misconfigurations in FPT Cloud's GPU offering, including PKeys/SAKey visibility into other customers' network endpoints, which kept the product out of the top service tier.
Can foreign hyperscalers legally compete with FPT Smart Cloud in Vietnam?
Vietnam's data-localization law requires domestic data storage, and as of mid-2025 AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud had no dedicated in-country data centers, only edge locations in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Despite this, hyperscalers still held about 78% of Vietnam's cloud market as of 2023.
