The call

T1 Energy's growth still runs through Trina-linked sales and a tax credit set to expire, with First Solar's cheaper, litigating rival looming over the same market.

T1 Energy manufactures solar panels at U.S. factories and receives most of its profit from a federal tax credit that covers part of production costs. The company is hard to root for because bigger rivals like First Solar already make panels cheaper at larger scale, and First Solar is suing T1 over patent claims in court. The one thing that matters most is whether Congress extends that tax credit past December 2026, because without it, T1's earnings disappear and its half-built factory becomes a liability.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. No AI product threatens module manufacturing directly; AI data-center power demand is a demand tailwind, not a predator here. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: First Solar. First Solar's cheaper thin-film CdTe modules already run at scale and it filed an ITC patent suit against T1's TOPCon tech in March 2026. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Section 45X manufacturing credits and a still-live Trina Solar supply relationship keep margins and volume alive for now.
What would change this call
Outcome of First Solar's Section 337 ITC patent case against T1 Energy. A production injunction would confirm First Solar can block T1's manufacturing directly.
Congressional action on Section 45X tax credit before December 31, 2026 deadline. No extension would collapse T1's margin structure and subsidy-dependent economics.
Share of T1 Energy revenue from non-Trina, arm's-length customers in 2026 filings. Continued Trina dominance shows T1 lacks independent commercial demand.

Questions people ask
Is FREYR Battery (now T1 Energy) profitable in 2026?
Mixed picture. Q1 2026 net income from continuing operations was $3.9 million on record Adjusted EBITDA of $9.1 million, but the consolidated net loss attributable to common stockholders was $(21.4) million, or $(0.08)/share, as of May 12, 2026.
Did FREYR Battery change its name?
Yes. On February 19, 2025, FREYR Battery rebranded to T1 Energy Inc., moved headquarters from Norway to Austin, Texas, and changed its NYSE ticker from FREY to TE, following its pivot into US solar manufacturing.
Is FREYR Battery still making lithium-ion batteries?
Largely no. The company cancelled its $2.6 billion Newnan, Georgia battery gigafactory in 2024, abandoning its 200 GWh-by-2030 goal, and shifted core operations to solar modules via its $340 million Trina Solar US asset acquisition, closed December 7, 2024.
Who is T1 Energy's biggest competitor threat?
First Solar. It filed a Section 337 ITC patent-infringement complaint around March 2026 naming Trina Solar including T1 Energy among ten accused companies over TOPCon technology, while also outproducing T1 with 10 to 14 GW of US capacity.
Is it risky to join T1 Energy (formerly FREYR Battery)?
There is real volatility: headcount swung from about 400 in 2023 down to roughly 180 after August 2024 layoffs, then up to an SEC-reported 562 by December 31, 2025, alongside a stock that dropped 35% in a single month as of mid-July 2026.
Could AI replace T1 Energy's manufacturing jobs?
Unlikely soon. T1's core work is physical solar module and cell manufacturing at its G1_Dallas facility, which the company frames as AI-resistant; it instead positions itself as a beneficiary of AI-driven data-center power demand via its June 2026 KORE Power acquisition.
