The call

Funcom survives on Tencent's money and two IPs it fully controls, while its newest game struggles to hold players and its Norway headcount keeps shrinking.

Funcom makes online games based on Conan and Dune, with Chinese parent company Tencent providing financial backing. The company owns Conan outright but licenses Dune from another rights holder, which limits its control. Its biggest game right now, Dune: Awakening, launched strong but players are leaving faster than expected, which is a serious problem for games designed to keep people paying over years. AI tools that generate game art and handle testing are pushing the whole industry to hire fewer people, and Funcom cut its workforce by a third in the past year and closed a studio, so job stability is risky. The real test comes in late 2026 when Dune: Awakening launches on PlayStation 5, because if players stick around and spend money then, the studio survives and grows, but if they leave again, the company will likely shrink further.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. Generative AI is cutting costs on art, QA, and localization, which is why headcount fell 34% in a year, not replacing the games themselves. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: None apparent. No big publisher is copying Conan or Dune licenses directly, the real threat is Funcom's own live-service game losing players to bigger survival titles. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Tencent ownership funds survival through layoffs, and exclusive rights to Conan and Dune keep two IPs no rival can touch.
What would change this call
Dune: Awakening PS5 launch (Sept 22, 2026) concurrent players 3 to 6 months later. Shows whether the console release actually rebuilds a shrinking player base.
Funcom headcount reported flat or up for two straight quarters. Shows whether the layoff cycle has actually ended.
Another Funcom studio closure or layoff round announced before mid 2027. Shows the contraction is continuing rather than stabilizing.

Questions people ask
Is Funcom profitable in 2026?
No recent public financial disclosures exist since Funcom went private under Tencent in July 2020. Its last public annual figures, from its Oslo-listed era, showed revenue of about US$33.8M in 2018 and US$26.6M in 2019. Profitability under Tencent ownership is not disclosed.
Who owns Funcom?
Funcom is 100% owned by Chinese conglomerate Tencent Holdings. Tencent took a 29% stake in September 2019, announced full acquisition in January 2020 valuing Funcom at about US$148M, and completed the buyout in July 2020, delisting it from Oslo Stock Exchange.
Is Funcom laying off staff?
Yes. In October 2025 Funcom closed subsidiary studio The Outsiders in Stockholm, cutting about 60 staff. Revelio Labs estimates total headcount fell to roughly 577 by Q4 2025, down 34% year over year from 813 in Q4 2024.
Is Dune: Awakening a success for Funcom?
Mixed. Dune: Awakening sold over 1 million copies in its first two weeks after launching June 10, 2025, Funcom's fastest-selling game ever. But by April 2026 reports described it as struggling to retain players, prompting a PvE-first design pivot, and its launch concurrent peak of 140,000 trailed Palworld's 370,000.
Could AI replace Funcom's game development?
Unlikely to replace it outright. Funcom's value sits in owned IP (Conan) and an exclusive Dune license from Legendary Entertainment plus live persistent servers, none of which AI can replicate without rights. AI mainly threatens cost structure via asset generation and QA, tied to the October 2025 restructuring.
Who is Funcom's biggest competitor?
In the survival-MMO genre, Palworld is the standout rival, its 2024 launch peaking at 370,000 concurrent players versus Dune: Awakening's 140,000 launch peak in June 2025, per analytics firm Alinea Analytics. Ark, Rust, and Once Human are also cited as genre peers.
