The call

FunPlus still pulls real cash from an aging hit while a sharper rival gains ground in the same genre, and its next titles remain unproven.

FunPlus makes strategy games for phones, most famously State of Survival. Its main problem is that a rival company called Century Games built a very similar game called Whiteout Survival that is now attracting more players, and FunPlus's old hit is making less money. AI tools can help make games cheaper to produce, but that does not destroy the business, just squeezes profits. The one thing that could save FunPlus is whether a new game called Aniimo, launching on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC in late 2026, actually keeps players interested and makes good money in its first six months.

Why
01
AI pressure: AI localization/content tools (e.g. Phrase platform). AI content and translation tools let it push more updates without adding staff, but this squeezes margins rather than replacing the game. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Century Games (Whiteout Survival). Whiteout Survival, a rival 4X survival game, outgrew State of Survival in revenue during H1 2025. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Steady cash from State of Survival's remaining players and no outside investors pushing for a quick exit or IPO.

Questions people ask
Is FunPlus profitable in 2026?
FunPlus has been bootstrapped and privately funded since 2016 with no outside equity control, suggesting it self-sustains on cash flow. However its own CBO admitted in December 2025 that 'financial performance in 2025 didn't fully meet our high expectations,' and flagship State of Survival revenue fell from $516M in 2021 to an estimated $63M in 2025.
Could AI replace jobs at FunPlus?
AI is automating back-office work, not creative roles. A December 2025 Phrase platform case study shows FunPlus's 17-person content team now produces 30% more localized content across 32 languages with no added headcount, but core game design and live-ops tuning remain human-driven as of mid-2026.
Who owns FunPlus?
FunPlus is privately held and controlled by co-founder and CEO Andy Zhong, with no outside equity control since it became bootstrapped in 2016. Its only prior funding was a $13M Series A in 2012 and $74M Series B in 2014, totaling roughly $86 to 87M, with no rounds since.
Is FunPlus doing layoffs?
Revelio Labs data shows FunPlus headcount fell to about 951 employees in Q4 2025, down 10.8% from 1,066 in 2023, despite the company's own site claiming a stable ~2,000 team members as of June 2026. Its Imagendary Studios subsidiary had a deep restructuring with majority layoffs in August 2023.
Will FunPlus's Aniimo game succeed?
Unknown as of mid-2026. Aniimo, FunPlus's first major console/PC title via Pawprint Studio, entered global closed beta on July 9, 2026, targeting a Q3 2026 launch on Xbox, PS5, Steam, and Epic Games Store. Its first two quarters of revenue and retention will determine whether FunPlus can execute beyond mobile 4X games.
