The call

G2 just got bigger by buying Gartner's review brands, but its lead-gen model depends on buyers clicking through, and AI chatbots are increasingly answering the question before anyone clicks.

G2 is a website where business buyers read reviews of software products written by other customers, and then G2 sells leads from those buyers back to software vendors. The problem is that more than half of business buyers now ask AI chatbots like ChatGPT for advice instead of visiting review sites, which means fewer people come to G2 to research, and fewer leads to sell to vendors. The one thing that could save G2 is if it can prove that its new AI tools and partnerships actually make money and keep vendors paying, but so far that has not been clearly shown.

Why
01
AI pressure: OpenAI, Google, Anthropic, Perplexity chatbots. 51% of B2B buyers now start research in AI chatbots, which pull answers from G2's own review text and skip the visit. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: Gartner (Peer Insights, kept separate in the deal). Gartner sold G2 three review brands but kept Peer Insights, so it still competes for the same enterprise research budget. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. 6 million verified reviews and paid vendor placements that buyers and AI models both keep citing as the top B2B software source.
What would change this call
G2 discloses a signed licensing or data deal with a frontier AI lab (OpenAI, Google, Anthropic, Perplexity). Shows G2 monetizing its review data as AI training/citation input rather than losing traffic to it.
G2's referral traffic or vendor-reported lead volume falls for two consecutive quarters. Confirms the AI-chatbot research shift is materially hollowing out G2's core lead-gen business.
G2 raises a new priced round or files for IPO at a valuation above or below the flat $1.1B mark. Signals whether investors believe G2's model survives the AI-search transition.
