The call

Games Workshop keeps posting record sales and profit while AI-assisted proxy printing spreads at the edges and no big rival has matched its owned IP, stores, or factories.

Games Workshop designs, manufactures, and sells miniature figurines and rulebooks for tabletop wargaming (mainly Warhammer). It owns all the game designs outright, runs its own factories, and has built a 40-year fan community that keeps coming back. No competitor like Hasbro or Asmodee has built anything close to as strong. The main risk is that AI could help people print fake copies at home instead of buying the real ones, which is why the company is already changing how it shows off new models online to make copying harder. If that copying spreads faster than the company can stop it, or if tariffs make prices too high, that lock-in could weaken.

Why
01
AI pressure: AI image-to-3D proxy printing (home 3D printers using AI-generated models). Fans use AI tools to turn preview images into printable proxy miniatures, but GW is suing over it and kit sales keep rising anyway. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: None apparent. Hasbro/Wizards, Asmodee, and Bandai sit nearby in tabletop gaming but none owns comparable IP, stores, or factories. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Owns the Warhammer IP outright, runs 575 branded stores and its own plastic factories, and litigates copycats directly.
What would change this call
Ghamak copyright litigation ruling (new evidence entered Nov 2025). Shows whether GW can keep enforcing IP against proxy/copycat miniatures makers.
FY2025/26 full results on 28 July 2026 show core/direct revenue growth. Confirms whether AI-print proxies or tariffs are denting official kit sales.
Amazon/Cavill Warhammer 40K screen project news (greenlight, delay, cancellation). Would signal brand exposure risk or additional licensing upside.
Key numbers
  • FY2024/25 revenue £617.5m, a record year (2025-06-01)
  • 575 stores worldwide, 202 in North America (2026-05-22)
  • Market cap roughly £6.5-7.2 billion (2026-07-15)
Named risks
  • US tariffs and de minimis removal pressuring margins (~£12m PBT hit flagged, de minimis end 31 Aug 2025). Severity: medium
  • AI image-to-3D proxy printing of previewed miniatures before official kits ship. Severity: medium
  • Licensing revenue lumpiness as Space Marine 2 peak (£30.1m H1) cycles down to £16.0m H1 FY2025/26. Severity: medium
  • Ongoing Ghamak copyright litigation outcome could weaken anti-proxy enforcement if ruling is adverse. Severity: medium
  • Rich valuation (~32-35x forward earnings) leaves stock exposed to sharp repricing on any growth miss. Severity: high

Questions people ask
Is Games Workshop profitable in 2026?
Yes. Games Workshop reported record FY2024/25 pre-tax profit of £262.8m on revenue of £617.5m (year ended 1 June 2025), and its FY2025/26 trading update (22 May 2026) guided to roughly £265m PBT on core revenue of at least £625m.
Could AI 3D-printing replace Games Workshop's miniature sales?
Not so far. AI image-to-3D proxy printing (documented in the 'Huron Blackheart' case, January 2026) lets fans copy previewed minis, but GW's core revenue still grew 17.3% YoY in H1 FY2025/26 (to £316.1m), and CEO Kevin Rountree said in January 2026 no exec is 'yet excited' about AI.
Who is Games Workshop's biggest competitor?
No rival matches its scale. Hasbro's Wizards of the Coast (Magic, D&D) is a larger diversified conglomerate, and Asmodee has broader distribution, but per Wargamer (17 Oct 2025) neither owns IP plus in-house plastic manufacturing plus 575 owned stores like GW does.
Is Games Workshop laying off staff?
No layoffs are reported. Headcount is growing: Revelio Labs counted about 3,095 employees worldwide as of December 2025, up from 2,925 in 2023, and GW paid staff a £20m bonus in May 2025 after record results.
Is it safe to invest in or join Games Workshop right now?
The core business looks stable, with 575 stores and record FY2024/25 revenue of £617.5m, but the stock is volatile, ranging from 14,070p (Oct 2025) to 23,540p (Jun 2026), and faces a ~£12m US tariff PBT hit flagged for FY2025/26.
Who owns Games Workshop?
Games Workshop Group PLC is a publicly listed, freestanding company on the London Stock Exchange (ticker GAW) with no parent company, and has been a FTSE 100 constituent since 20 December 2024.
