The call

Gemini holds a real regulatory charter but is burning hundreds of millions a year while chasing crowded markets where Coinbase, Kraken, Robinhood, Kalshi, and Polymarket already have the users.

Gemini runs a cryptocurrency trading platform and holds customer crypto in regulated vaults, but it is being crushed by competition. Bigger rivals like Coinbase and Kraken make 15 to 25 times more money, while Gemini's main customers, large institutions, pay almost nothing per trade (2 to 3 cents per dollar traded), replacing the higher fees retail customers once paid. Gemini tried to start a prediction market (betting app), a stock trading app, and a credit card product, but these are crowded spaces where established companies like Kalshi, Polymarket, and Robinhood already dominate, and Gemini has no real edge. The one thing that could turn this around is if Gemini's cost-cutting (lower salaries and marketing spend) gets the company close to breaking even, and if its new products somehow gain real users, but the next earnings reports in mid to late 2026 will show whether either of those is actually happening.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI is not the threat here, it is an internal cost tool Gemini cites for 40% of code changes. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Coinbase, plus Kraken, Robinhood, and SoFi. Coinbase alone books 15 to 25 times Gemini's revenue while Robinhood and Kraken pull retail traders away with cheaper, broader products. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Its New York DFS trust charter and regulated custody business, holding roughly $18 to 21 billion in assets.
What would change this call
Gemini's Q2/Q3 2026 earnings show loss rate narrowing toward or below $200M/year. Would indicate cost cuts are working and the business is stabilizing.
Gemini Predictions or its stock-trading product retains users past launch quarter. Would show the pivots are gaining real traction against Kalshi, Polymarket, or Robinhood.
Institutional custody AUM ($18-21B) grows or shrinks in reported disclosures. Would reveal whether Gemini's one regulatory moat is strengthening or eroding.

Questions people ask
Is Gemini profitable in 2026?
No. Gemini posted a net loss of $582.8M to $602M for FY2025 on revenue of about $142M, and Q4 2025 alone lost $140.8M. The company launched a 2026 cost program targeting 15-20% lower compensation expense to narrow losses.
Did Gemini lay off employees in 2026?
Yes. Gemini cut about 25% of global staff starting February 5, 2026, exiting the UK, EU, and Australia, and by March 1, 2026 headcount had fallen roughly 30% to about 445 employees, partly attributed to AI handling 40% of code changes.
Who is Gemini's biggest competitor?
Coinbase, whose H1 2025 revenue of about $3.5B and 10M+ monthly users dwarf Gemini's sub-1% market share as of March 2026. Kraken ($883M H1 2025 revenue) and Robinhood/SoFi also compete directly.
Who owns Gemini the crypto exchange?
Gemini Space Station, Inc. is founded and controlled by Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, who took it public on Nasdaq under ticker GEMI on September 12, 2025, and personally injected $100M via Winklevoss Capital Fund on May 14, 2026.
Could AI replace Gemini's custody business?
No. Gemini's core moat is a New York DFS Limited Purpose Trust Charter and CFTC-approved Gemini Titan entity, regulated custody functions requiring licensing and liability coverage that AI cannot substitute; AI is used internally for coding, not customer-facing custody.
Why did Gemini's stock crash after its IPO?
Gemini shares fell about 88% from the $28 IPO price to roughly $4.52 to $5.26 by mid-2026, driven by a $282.5M H1 2025 net loss, simultaneous February 2026 departures of the COO, CFO, and Chief Legal Officer, and a securities class action filed April 21, 2026.
