The call

Genting Hong Kong Limited is a closed liquidation estate, not a company that competitors or AI could threaten because it no longer operates.

Genting Hong Kong Limited ran Star Cruises but filed for bankruptcy in January 2022 and was officially wound down by the court in October 2022. The company is now a shell in liquidation, with no ships, no employees, and no money coming in, so there is nothing left to compete with rivals like Royal Caribbean or Carnival. The one thing that could confuse the picture is that the Genting corporate family still exists in other forms, such as a relaunched private cruise brand and a casino operator in Malaysia, but the original Hong Kong cruise company itself no longer operates.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. There is no operating business left for AI to disrupt or assist, liquidators are just closing out the estate. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: Royal Caribbean Group; Carnival Corporation. These rivals compete in the cruise market that Genting Hong Kong Ltd no longer participates in, the company has no ships or customers to lose. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. None. The company is in liquidation with no revenue, staff, or equity value to protect.

Questions people ask
Is Genting Hong Kong Limited still an operating company in 2026?
No. Genting Hong Kong Limited filed for bankruptcy in Bermuda on 18-19 January 2022, was ordered into liquidation on 7 October 2022, and was delisted from the Hong Kong Stock Exchange on 16 May 2023. It is now a liquidation estate with no revenue, staff, or operations, run by Alvarez & Marsal Asia liquidators.
Can I still book a cruise with Star Cruises or Genting Hong Kong?
Not with the original Genting Hong Kong entity, which is defunct. A legally separate company, Resorts World Cruises, relaunched the StarCruises and Dream Cruises brand names in February-March 2025, with flagship Star Voyager sailing Singapore-Jakarta-Melaka-Ho Chi Minh City from 26 March 2025.
Who owns Genting Hong Kong now?
The defunct entity is controlled by court-appointed liquidators Edward Middleton, Tiffany Wong Wing Sze, and Edward Whittaker of Alvarez & Marsal Asia. Before collapse, Lim Kok Thay's Golden Hope Limited held about 69% as of April 2020. The relaunched StarCruises/Dream Cruises brands are a separate vehicle tied to Lim Kok Thay.
What caused Genting Hong Kong's collapse?
A cross-default triggered in January 2022 by the insolvency of its German shipyard subsidiary MV Werften. At the point of collapse group debts totaled roughly US$2.8 billion, following a first-half 2020 loss of US$742.6 million and US$3.37 billion in debt as of 31 July 2020.
Is joining the relaunched StarCruises or Dream Cruises safe career-wise?
It is an early-stage relaunch (since March 2025) of a small fleet, two ships under StarCruises and one under Dream Cruises as of 2025, run by a new entity, Resorts World Cruises, distinct from the bankrupt Genting Hong Kong Ltd. No public financials or headcount data exist for this successor yet.
Who is Genting Hong Kong's biggest competitor?
Historically Royal Caribbean Group, Carnival Corporation, MSC Cruises, and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, which Star Cruises co-founded and later divested from. The defunct entity itself no longer competes; its assets, ships, and routes were sold or scrapped after the 2022 bankruptcy.
