The call

GK8 has genuine security tech but sits inside a parent burning cash, while Fireblocks and BitGo pull ahead on scale and licensing.

GK8 makes vaults that keep cryptocurrency locked away safely, using air-gapped technology that is hard to break into. The problem is that Fireblocks, which already handles over 10 trillion dollars in crypto moves, and BitGo, which just got a bank charter and is about to go public, are much bigger and growing faster. GK8's parent company Galaxy is losing hundreds of millions of dollars and has debt coming due soon, so it may not have the money to help GK8 win against these stronger competitors, unless Galaxy's new AI data center business starts making real money in the second half of 2026.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. Custody is a security and legal problem, not a task language models compete on today. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Fireblocks and BitGo. Fireblocks moves $10T+ and even sits inside Galaxy's own stack; BitGo's OCC charter and 2026 IPO fund faster mandate capture. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Air-gapped vault design, 9 patents, and $1B insurance give GK8 a real technical edge rivals must match.
What would change this call
Galaxy discloses whether its own custody flows run on GK8 or stay on Fireblocks in 2026 filings. shows if GK8 has real internal preference or is second choice to a rival within its own parent.
BitGo completes its planned IPO and announces new custody mandates in 2026. would show BitGo converting public capital into faster share capture than GK8.
Galaxy's Q2/Q3 2026 earnings show whether CoreWeave revenue offsets digital-asset segment losses. indicates whether GK8 gets sustained parent investment or is starved amid Galaxy's losses.

Questions people ask
Is GK8 profitable?
GK8 does not report standalone financials. Its parent segment, Galaxy Asset Management and Infrastructure Solutions, generated $82M adjusted gross profit in FY2025, but parent Galaxy Digital posted an overall net loss of $482M in Q4 2025, as of February 2, 2026.
Who owns GK8?
GK8 is a wholly owned subsidiary of Galaxy Digital (Nasdaq: GLXY). Galaxy agreed in December 2022 to acquire GK8 out of the Celsius Network bankruptcy process, completing the roughly $44 million acquisition in February 2023.
Could AI replace GK8's custody technology?
Unlikely for its core product. GK8's moat is physical and regulatory: an air-gapped Impenetrable Vault architecture and up to $1B in vendor-claimed insurance coverage per vault, as of June 2025. AI could affect adjacent KYC and support workflows but not the hardware or licensing moat.
Who is GK8's biggest competitor?
Fireblocks, which reports $10T+ in cumulative transfers as of 2026 and itself lists Galaxy as a customer. BitGo, which IPO'd on NYSE January 22, 2026 with an OCC charter and roughly $100B+ in assets under custody, is also a major rival.
Does GK8 offer insurance on custody assets?
GK8 advertises up to $1 billion in insurance coverage per Impenetrable Vault, according to its own website as of June 2025. This figure is a vendor claim from GK8, not independently verified by a third party.
Is Galaxy Digital, GK8's parent, in financial trouble?
Galaxy Digital reported a $482M net loss in Q4 2025 and a $216M net loss in Q1 2026, and carries a $445M exchangeable note maturing December 2026, signaling near-term liquidity pressure at the parent level.
