The call

GlobalData still collects subscription cash from 5,000+ clients, but its commodity market reports are getting cheaper to replace with AI while growth and margins both slide.

GlobalData publishes industry reports, market forecasts, and company intelligence to 5,000+ paying clients through yearly subscriptions. It is getting harder to defend because ChatGPT, Claude, and similar AI tools can now generate basic market sizes and trend predictions that used to require paid subscriptions, and larger companies like S&P Global and Gartner already have bigger client networks and deeper pockets to copy or replace what GlobalData does. The one thing that could change this picture is if GlobalData finds a way to grow revenue again (it is stuck at 1% right now) by charging more for insights that AI cannot easily replicate, rather than just keeping existing customers happy.

Why
01
AI pressure: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and agentic research tools. Free chatbots now produce rough market sizing and industry stats that used to require a GlobalData subscription. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: S&P Global Market Intelligence and Gartner. Bigger, better funded rivals compete on price and breadth in the same overlapping advisory and data markets. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Proprietary datasets and 2,000 in-house analysts that generic AI models cannot fully replicate or verify.
What would change this call
HY26 results on 14 Sept 2026 show organic revenue growth rate and EBITDA margin trend. Reacceleration above 4% with stable margin suggests the moat holds; continued 1% growth with further margin loss confirms erosion.
Whether AI Hub or similar AI tools show pricing power (not just usage) in FY26/27 reporting. Pricing power would show clients pay more for AI-enhanced data; flat pricing suggests AI is only a retention tool, not a growth driver.
Any large client migrations or contract non-renewals disclosed in trading updates through 2027. Would show whether commodity-tier clients are switching to free or cheaper AI-generated market data instead of GlobalData subscriptions.

  • Commodity market-sizing and templated forecasts exposed to substitution by generative AI tools. Severity: medium
  • Missed prior £500m annualized revenue target for end-2026, prompting analyst price-target cuts (Berenberg 260p to 170p). Severity: medium
  • Integration risk from recent acquisitions (AI Palette, Stylus, Cambridge Healthcare) and reorganized sales model. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is GlobalData profitable in 2025?
Yes. GlobalData reported FY2025 adjusted EBITDA of £110.2m on revenue of £322.1m, but EBITDA fell 6% year on year and margin compressed from 41% to 34%, per the company's Full Year Results announcement dated 2026-03-02.
Is GlobalData's revenue actually growing?
Reported revenue rose 13% to £322.1m in FY2025, but underlying organic growth was just 1%, meaning almost all growth came from acquisitions like Stylus and AI Palette, per company results dated 2026-03-02.
Could AI replace GlobalData's research reports?
GlobalData's commodity market-sizing and templated forecasts are flagged as exposed to generative AI substitution as of 2025-04-11. The company counters with proprietary-data-grounded AI Hub and Ava tools, but organic growth stayed at just 1% in FY2025 despite this investment.
Who is GlobalData's biggest competitor?
Gartner, with roughly $4.2bn revenue and 17,000 employees as of 2026-06-29, dwarfs GlobalData's £322m FY2025 revenue. GlobalData competes on price and breadth against Gartner, S&P Global Market Intelligence, and consulting firms rather than matching their scale.
Is GlobalData being taken over or acquired?
KKR explored a potential takeover of GlobalData in April to May 2025 but formally withdrew on 2025-05-27 without making an offer. No new acquirer has since surfaced as of the July 2026 trading update.
Who owns GlobalData?
GlobalData Plc is publicly listed on the London Stock Exchange (ticker DATA), moving from AIM to the Main Market on 2026-03-05. It sold a 40% minority stake in its Healthcare division to Inflexion Private Equity for £434m, a deal that closed in mid-2024.
