The call

GWI still owns real panel data that AI models need, but flat headcount, falling traffic, and no new funding since 2022 leave it exposed just as Qualtrics and synthetic-panel rivals ship cheaper substitutes.

GlobalWebIndex runs a database of about 1.4 million survey responses per year from people across 50+ countries, which it sells to companies that want to understand what consumers think and do. This real survey data is hard for artificial intelligence to copy from scratch, but Qualtrics (a much larger competitor) just launched a product that uses AI to create fake survey respondents that work almost as well at a fraction of the cost and speed. GWI's own plan to feed its data into popular AI tools like ChatGPT has not yet stopped the slowdown: the company has not grown its staff or traffic in three years, and no new investors have backed it since early 2022. The company will likely be bought by another firm in the next few years rather than stay independent.

Why
01
AI pressure: Qualtrics Edge and synthetic-panel startups like Evidenza, Replicas, SYMAR. Synthetic respondent panels claim 85-95% parity to real people at lower cost, pulling budget from GWI's paid survey model. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Qualtrics. Qualtrics Edge shipped March 2026 with its own synthetic-panel product, bundled into an enterprise suite GWI cannot match on distribution. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. A continuously refreshed licensed panel of 1.4 million real interviews across 50+ markets that synthetic models still need to calibrate against.
What would change this call
GWI reports a new funding round or Permira exit event (sale, secondary, Series C) by 2027. Would confirm PE hold is ending and reveal whether valuation held above $850M or fell.
GWI headcount or web traffic turns positive for two consecutive quarters. Would show AI pivot (Spark API, Agent Spark) is reversing the multi year growth stall.
Mid-market customers publicly switch spend to Qualtrics Edge or synthetic-panel tools. Would show real-panel revenue is being displaced by cheaper synthetic substitutes.
Key numbers
  • Crustdata growth score 4/100 (June 2026)
  • Headcount flat ~760 since Jan 2023 (June 2026)
  • No funding round since $180M Series B (Feb 2022)
Named risks
  • Synthetic AI panels (Qualtrics Edge and rivals) undercut GWI's real-panel value on cost and speed. Severity: high
  • No new funding round since February 2022 raises pressure for a sale or down-round exit. Severity: medium
  • Growth plateau in headcount and product traffic despite rapid AI feature launches since 2025. Severity: medium
  • GDPR and global data-privacy exposure inherent to operating a worldwide consumer survey panel. Severity: medium
  • Wide inconsistency in third-party revenue estimates signals limited financial transparency. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is GWI profitable in 2026?
GWI does not disclose profit figures publicly. Third-party revenue estimates range from about $229.5M to $380M as of 2026, but no confirmed profitability data exists. The company last raised capital in a $180M Series B in February 2022 led by Permira, valuing it over $850M.
Could AI replace GWI's research business?
Partially. GWI's core panel data (roughly 1.4M annual interviews across 50+ markets) cannot be scraped by LLMs, but Qualtrics Edge launched March 2026 with synthetic 'digital twin' panels claimed at 85 to 95 percent parity to real respondents at lower cost, directly threatening GWI's custom-research revenue.
Who owns GWI?
GWI (legal entity Trendstream Ltd) is privately held. Permira led a $180M Series B in February 2022 valuing the company over $850M, alongside earlier backer Stripes Group, which led GWI's $40M Series A in July 2018. No new equity round has been reported since February 2022.
Who is GWI's biggest competitor?
GWI competes most directly with YouGov, Statista, Kantar, and Qualtrics. The sharpest new threat is Qualtrics Edge, launched March 2026, which uses synthetic AI panels claimed to match 85 to 95 percent of real human panel accuracy at lower cost and speed.
Has GWI raised new funding recently?
No. GWI's last funding round was a $180M Series B led by Permira in February 2022 at a valuation over $850M. As of mid-2026, no new equity round had been reported, roughly 54 months without fresh capital.
What is GWI's AI strategy?
Since April 2025 GWI has launched Spark (AI insights assistant), Canvas (AI deck builder), and Spark API, then Agent Spark in January 2026 embedding its panel data into ChatGPT, Claude, and Microsoft Copilot via MCP, positioning its human survey data as the layer underneath AI-generated answers.
