The call

A newly profitable niche bank with a real license and a defended SME lending corner, but its BaaS growth pillar sits in open contest with a much bigger rival.

GMO Aozora Net Bank is a licensed online bank that lends to startups and small companies using fast, no-paperwork decisions, and also offers banking tools that other companies can plug into their apps. It makes money and has grown, but a larger competitor called Sumishin SBI Net Bank is moving into the same space with more resources and existing customers. The real question is whether GMO Aozora can grow its 'rent-out-our-banking-tools' business faster than larger banks copy it, because its lending business is harder for them to enter due to how expensive it would be.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI tools handle underwriting and KYC workflows the bank already automates, acting as a supplier rather than a rival bank. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Sumishin SBI Net Bank (NEOBANK). SBI's NEOBANK platform is live in BaaS and embedded finance with 5 to 7 times more deposits, contesting the same corporate account growth. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. A banking license plus a no-statement, 2-day loan product megabanks cannot profitably match for small, unproven borrowers.

Could AI replace GMO Aozora Net Bank?
No. AI can automate workflows like underwriting and KYC, which the bank already does with roughly 224 employees managing 100,000+ accounts as of October 2024, but only a licensed bank under FSA supervision can hold deposits and issue credit, so AI vendors are suppliers, not replacements.
