The call

Core payments, domains and hosting keep earning steady profit while the new GPU Cloud bet faces hyperscaler pricing pressure and unproven margins.

GMO Internet Group runs payments, domain registration, web hosting, and stock trading services mostly in Japan, where it has operated safely for 35 years because local rules and bank connections protect it from direct U.S. competition. The real threat is not to these old businesses (Stripe and PayPal have not dislodged them), but to the new GPU cloud computing unit GMO is pouring money into to compete with Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud, which spend vastly more and already dominate. The one thing that could change everything is whether GMO's graphics-processor cloud business can turn a profit and keep growing over the next year or two, or whether it becomes a money-losing drain that forces the company to abandon the push.

Why
01
AI pressure: AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, Oracle AI/GPU cloud platforms. Hyperscaler AI clouds could undercut GMO's new GPU Cloud unit on price before it scales profit. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, Oracle. These hyperscalers can outspend GMO's GPU Cloud on capacity and price, pressuring its newest growth bet. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Japan-specific licensing, bank integrations and decades of local trust protect its core payments, domain and hosting businesses.
What would change this call
GMO Coin standalone TSE listing proceeds within 6 months as disclosed Feb 2026. Would show group restructuring to unlock value amid share skepticism.
Q2 FY2026 earnings (post mid-July 2026) show revenue/profit growth continuing near Q1 pace. Would show AI capex and GPU Cloud momentum is durable, not a one-quarter spike.
GMO Internet Inc. (4784) share price stabilizes or keeps falling beyond the ~39% YTD drop. Would show whether market skepticism on AI/GPU capex ROI is easing or worsening.

Questions people ask
What is GMO's biggest risk?
The biggest risk is SAKURA Internet, which secured Japan's Government Cloud designation in November 2023 and a reported $10 billion Microsoft/SoftBank-backed buildout announced in April 2026, pulling ahead of GMO in domestic GPU cloud capacity. Our July 2026 assessment found that GMO faces meaningful but not severe competitive pressure in this area, well behind SAKURA's government-anchored momentum. A dated watch-item is whether GMO GPU Cloud remains a distant second in Japanese GPU cloud revenue share through April 2027.
Is GMO Internet Group in financial trouble?
No, the numbers point to steady growth rather than distress. Consolidated revenue reached 285.26 billion yen in FY2025, up 3.3% year over year, with net profit attributable to owners at 16.75 billion yen, up 12.8%, as of December 31, 2025. The company's recurring contract base and licensing across its group give it predictable cash flow that supports this financial position.
Who are GMO Internet Group's biggest competitors?
In Japan's GPU cloud space, SAKURA Internet is the most direct rival, having pulled ahead with a government cloud contract and reported billion-dollar backing as of April 2026. Globally, hyperscalers AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud dominate broader cloud share (roughly 30%, 21%, and 12% as of Q4 2024), while KDDI's IDC Frontier, NTT Communications, and Fujitsu compete for enterprise and government AI infrastructure deals within Japan.
Is GMO Internet Group at risk from AI?
Partly. AI-driven self-serve ad platforms from Google and Meta are building pressure on GMO NIKKO's media and ad-placement revenue by letting advertisers skip agencies entirely. Separately, GMO's own GPU cloud unit reached standalone profitability as of December 31, 2025, but still trails SAKURA Internet's government-backed lead, a gap worth tracking through April 2027.
What protects GMO Internet Group from its competitors?
GMO's shield is its scale of recurring, licensed business: 12.63 million recurring contracts generating an 84.9% recurring revenue ratio as of December 2025, plus JFSA and METI licensing across a diversified group of services. This insulates the hosting and payments core from the more volatile, faster-moving GPU cloud race where SAKURA Internet currently leads.
How does GMO Internet Group's competitive pressure compare to peers?
Our July 2026 assessment, which covered 9,980 companies including a 150-company category alongside GMO, found that GMO faces somewhat less competitive pressure than the typical company it was compared against. This is largely because its core recurring-revenue hosting and payments business is more insulated than its GPU cloud unit, which still trails SAKURA Internet's government-backed buildout.
