The call

GoDaddy still owns the world's biggest pile of domains, but Namecheap and Cloudflare are chipping at the edges while its own AI upsell rides on someone else's model.

GoDaddy is a company that registers internet domain names and sells website-building tools to small business owners. It is hard to replace because it holds official approval from ICANN (the organization that controls all domains) and already manages 88 to 91 million domains for 20 million customers, but that advantage is weakening: it lost over 600,000 domains in 2025 while competitors like Namecheap and Cloudflare took customers by charging less. GoDaddy's newer AI-powered tools like Airo are built using someone else's artificial intelligence (Claude from Anthropic), so when free AI site builders become standard, those products could stop making money. The one thing that could turn this around is whether GoDaddy can keep customers paying for AI features once they realize they can build websites with free AI tools anywhere else.

Why
01
AI pressure: Anthropic Claude (powers GoDaddy's own Airo builder) plus free consumer AI site-generators. Airo is a Claude wrapper doing $10M+ in bookings, but free AI site builders threaten to commoditize the same workflow it sells. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Cloudflare Registrar and Namecheap. GoDaddy lost 622,708 net .com domains in 2025 while Namecheap gained 2 million and Cloudflare sells at cost. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. ICANN accreditation and 88 to 91 million domains under management make switching registrars a hassle most owners avoid.

Questions people ask
Is GoDaddy profitable in 2026?
Yes. GoDaddy reported Q1 2026 revenue of $1.27B (up 6.1% YoY) with GAAP EPS of $1.60, beating consensus by roughly 5.3%, and guided full-year 2026 revenue to $5.195B-$5.275B with normalized EBITDA margin at or above 33% and free cash flow near $1.8B, as of April 30, 2026.
Is GoDaddy losing domain market share?
Yes. GoDaddy lost 622,708 net .com domains in the twelve months ending December 31, 2025, while Namecheap gained about 2 million, making Namecheap the fastest-growing major registrar even as GoDaddy remains the largest with 88-91M domains and roughly 10.8% share as of February 2026.
Who owns GoDaddy?
GoDaddy is a public company (NYSE: GDDY) with a market cap of about $12.6B as of July 21, 2026. It was taken private in 2011 by KKR, Silver Lake, and TCV for about $2.25B, then IPO'd April 1, 2015. Silver Lake, Vanguard, BlackRock, and T. Rowe Price are major institutional holders as of 2025.
Could AI replace GoDaddy's website builder business?
GoDaddy's own Airo AI Builder is built on Anthropic's Claude (upgraded to Claude 4.6 in March 2026) and reached a $10M+ annualized bookings run rate by April 2026 per management. Since site-generation AI is becoming widely free, GoDaddy's margin on this upsell layer faces commoditization pressure even as it drives current growth.
Who is GoDaddy's biggest competitor?
In domains, Namecheap is the fastest-growing rival, gaining about 2 million .com domains in 2025 versus GoDaddy's net loss of 622,708. In website builders, Wix holds roughly 33% of the drag-and-drop builder segment versus GoDaddy's 19%, per W3Techs-sourced data as of March 2026.
Is GoDaddy facing lawsuits?
Yes. As of July 2026, law firms including Rosen Law Firm and Kaplan Fox are investigating potential securities-law violations tied to a Q4 2025 domain promotional-pricing disclosure that triggered a stock drop of more than 14% in a single day on February 25, 2026.
