The call

Grab keeps growing revenue and cash flow while Indonesia's commission cap and the GoTo rivalry squeeze the mobility business it built its network on.

Grab runs ride-hailing, food delivery, and financial services across eight Southeast Asian countries. It is hard to replace because it has operating licenses, a large network of drivers and merchants, and years of customer data, which is why Uber left the region in 2018 rather than compete. However, its profit margins are shrinking: Indonesia just capped commissions on motorbike rides from 20% to 8% starting July 2026, and similar rules could spread to other countries and services. The key question is whether Grab can make up the lost ride-hailing money by growing its lending and payments business fast enough over the next year.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI models like OpenAI's power Grab's own driver tools rather than replacing it; agents can't hold banking licenses or dispatch physical fleets. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: GoTo Group (Gojek/Tokopedia). GoTo remains the one same-size rival in an unresolved duopoly, and Indonesia's commission cap cuts Grab's margin more than GoTo's home-market position. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Fintech licenses, two-sided driver and merchant networks, and a 20 billion order dataset across 8 countries that took a decade to build.
What would change this call
Indonesia extends the 8% commission cap from two-wheelers to four-wheelers. Would show regulatory margin pressure spreading beyond the current mandate.
Grab's Q2 to Q4 2026 EBITDA growth stalls or contracts after the July 2026 commission cut. Would show mobility-margin erosion outpacing financial-services growth.
Taiwan FTC blocks or delays Grab's foodpanda acquisition. Would show a regulatory wall against Grab's geographic expansion.

Questions people ask
Is Grab profitable in 2026?
Grab is not yet GAAP profitable but is cash-generative: Q1 2026 adjusted EBITDA hit $154 million, its 17th consecutive quarter of growth, with trailing-12-month adjusted free cash flow around $489 million as of May 4, 2026, per company earnings.
Who owns Grab Holdings?
Grab is Nasdaq-listed (GRAB). Major shareholders include SoftBank Vision Fund (~9.8%), Toyota (~5.45%), and MUFG Bank (~3.5%) as of February 2026. Uber Technologies is described as Grab's largest shareholder, a legacy of its 2018 Southeast Asia exit for equity.
Could AI replace Grab?
Unlikely soon. Grab's moat is regulated fintech licenses (GXS Bank, Superbank), physical driver/merchant fleets, and a 20-billion-order dataset that pure AI agents cannot hold licenses or dispatch. Grab instead uses AI internally, launching its OpenAI-built driver assistant 'Coach' to 500,000 drivers by April 8, 2026.
Who is Grab's biggest competitor?
GoTo Group (Gojek/Tokopedia) is Grab's closest regional rival in ride-hailing and food delivery across Indonesia, with recurring but unresolved merger speculation; GoTo denied talks again in November 2025 and no merger notification had been filed as of that date.
Will Grab merge with GoTo?
Uncertain. Talks have surfaced on and off since 2024, but GoTo most recently denied any merger in November 2025, and Singapore's competition watchdog confirmed no merger notification had been filed as of November 14, 2025.
Is Grab stock a buy after the Indonesia commission cut?
Grab cut Indonesian two-wheeler driver commissions from 20% to 8% effective July 1, 2026 under new regulation, yet shares traded near 52-week lows (~$3.48-3.62) even after 24% Q1 2026 revenue growth was reported on May 4, 2026, reflecting investor skepticism about margin durability.
