The call

Gradiant rides AI data center capex today, but its growth is tied to that same cycle and to giants who could copy its niche with more capital.

Gradiant makes equipment and services to remove harmful chemicals (like PFAS) from water used by data centers and factories. The company has built real relationships with customers who rely on its systems, and it owns patents on its water-cleaning technology, but larger companies like Veolia and Xylem could copy the idea or buy smaller specialists to compete. The biggest risk is that Gradiant's recent growth is almost entirely tied to data-center spending, so if that building boom slows down in the next six to twelve months, the company's growth will fall and its plan to go public and make investors money could fall apart.

Why
01
AI pressure: Xylem's Decision Intelligence AI monitoring platform. Xylem's AI-driven monitoring layer could commoditize the data and analytics side of water treatment, squeezing service margins around Gradiant's plants. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Veolia, Xylem (post-Evoqua), Ecolab/Nalco. Veolia (over 45 billion euros) and Xylem keep buying and expanding membrane and PFAS capacity that could match or outscale Gradiant's specialty plants. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Long-term contracts and embedded plants at named customers like TSMC, Coca-Cola, and Tesla make switching costly and slow.
What would change this call
Veolia or Xylem announces a competing PFAS destruction or advanced membrane product win at a semiconductor fab. Would show incumbents directly displacing Gradiant on its core technical differentiator.
Gradiant files an IPO S-1 or delays its late 2027 IPO target. S-1 disclosures would reveal true revenue concentration and growth durability beyond self-reported figures.
AI data-center or semiconductor capex growth slows in 2026-2027 industry reports. Would signal cyclical exposure hitting Gradiant's backlog given its AI-linked concentration.
Key numbers
  • $2B valuation after Series E round (2026-05-18)
  • 50% revenue growth in 2025 vs 2024 (2026-01-05)
  • $500M+ in new orders booked for 2026 (2026-01-05)
Named risks
  • Backlog and growth concentrated in AI data-center and semiconductor capex, exposed to a capex slowdown. Severity: high
  • PE-backed roll-up consolidation (600+ platforms by 2025) could fund a direct well-capitalized rival. Severity: medium
  • Key revenue and profitability figures are vendor-authored and not independently confirmed by filings. Severity: medium
  • No structural IP barrier prevents Veolia, Xylem, or Ecolab from acquiring or replicating PFAS/membrane tech. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Gradiant profitable in 2026?
Gradiant self-reported in its January 2026 Year in Review that profitability rose 4x in 2025 versus 2024, alongside over 50% revenue growth and $500M+ in new 2026 orders. These are company-stated figures, not independently audited or filed.
Who owns Gradiant and is it publicly traded?
Gradiant is privately held, backed by Warburg Pincus, BoltRock, Centaurus Capital, Safar Partners and Hostplus. It raised a Series E at a $2 billion valuation on May 18, 2026, and is not yet public, though CEO Anurag Bajpayee has said it is close to IPO ready.
Could AI replace Gradiant's water treatment business?
No. Gradiant sells capital-intensive hardware and on-site engineering services like PFAS destruction and membrane systems across 2,500+ installed plants (as of January 2025). AI cannot substitute physical treatment infrastructure, and AI data-center demand is actually fueling Gradiant's record 2026 backlog.
Who is Gradiant's biggest competitor?
Veolia, Xylem (post-Evoqua acquisition), and Ecolab/Nalco are Gradiant's main incumbent rivals in industrial water treatment. Gradiant's own May 2026 marketing claims wins against Veolia and Suez in specific bids, though it remains far smaller in scale than these global players.
Will Gradiant IPO soon?
CEO Anurag Bajpayee said in mid-2026 the company is 'pretty close to being IPO-ready,' with one trade report citing a possible listing roughly 18 months after the May 2026 Series E raise, putting a target around late 2027. No confirmed date has been set.
How much money has Gradiant raised?
Gradiant's Series E closed May 18, 2026 at a $2 billion valuation, led by Safar Partners and Hostplus Superannuation Fund. Total disclosed equity raised across all rounds is roughly $325-375 million plus a $50 million HSBC debt facility from October 2025.
