The call

GWM still sells more trucks and SUVs than almost anyone in China, but its profit is shrinking as NEV rivals eat into home turf faster than its overseas growth can offset.

Great Wall Motors makes pickup trucks, SUVs, and hybrid vehicles in China and sells them globally. The company built its strength over 26 years in gas-powered pickups and 16 years in SUVs, plus it makes its own chips and partners with BMW. But Chinese competitors like Leapmotor, BYD, and companies linked to Huawei are now outselling Great Wall in electric vehicles, which are becoming the main market. The company's profits dropped 22 percent last year and 46 percent in early 2026 even though sales grew, a sign that newer products make less money. The one thing that could turn this around is whether Great Wall can match rivals on electric vehicle sales and profits in the second half of 2026, and whether its new models gain real buyers in Europe before 2029.

Why
01
AI pressure: AI-driven cockpit and ADAS software (industry-wide). AI is flattening cockpit and driver-assist software into a commodity, erasing a feature edge GWM once had. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Leapmotor and the Huawei-linked Harmony Intelligent Mobility Alliance. In June 2026 these rivals' NEVs reportedly outsold GWM domestically, 47,900 units, GWM's weakest monthly domestic tally. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. 26 years as China's top pickup seller, 16 as top SUV seller, plus overseas sales now over half of volume.
