The picture

Cars are being remade twice at once, first by the shift to electric drivetrains and software-defined vehicles, second by Chinese manufacturers who build both cheaper and faster than almost anyone else. BYD alone is reshaping the whole picture, taking share from Hyundai and Kia in China and Europe, from SAIC and GAC at home, and forcing Volvo, Porsche and Nissan into price and margin retreats. The companies holding up best are not the flashy EV names but the ones with a real physical moat: heavy trucks (Daimler Truck, Traton), tires (Bridgestone), parts supply (Hyundai Mobis), and Indian two and three wheelers (Hero MotoCorp, Eicher Motors) where Chinese EV makers have not yet arrived at scale. Meanwhile a wave of pure EV startups, Fisker, Canoo, Nikola, Arrival, Mullen, Luminar, have already gone bankrupt or liquidated, proving that promises about future software and self-driving revenue do not pay today's bills. The one thing deciding survival is whether a company controls something hard to copy, a factory network, a parts relationship, a dealer base, or is just selling a car that any factory in Shenzhen can now build faster and cheaper. Scale and China exposure, more than any AI feature, is what separates the steady names from the ones sliding.

Questions people ask
Is Stellantis in trouble?
Stellantis faces pressure from both ends, undercut on price by BYD and Geely in Europe and outsold at scale by Toyota, VW and Hyundai-Kia globally. Its moat score is low, reflecting few defenses against either kind of competitor.
Which car companies are most exposed to Chinese EV makers?
NIO, XPeng, Li Auto, SAIC, GAC, BAIC and Great Wall all show direct pressure from BYD along with newer names like Xiaomi EV and Leapmotor. Even Hyundai and Volvo report falling China and Europe sales tied to the same competitors.
Are EV startups like Fisker and Canoo actually gone?
Yes. Fisker, Canoo, Nikola and Arrival are all defunct or in liquidation, with established automakers like Ford, GM, Rivian and Hyundai absorbing the fleet and EV demand they once chased.
Why is Porsche losing ground in China?
Porsche's China deliveries have fallen 26-28% for two straight years as buyers turn to Xiaomi's SU7, NIO, and BYD's Yangwang brand for premium electric options.
Is the robotaxi and self-driving car race already decided?
Not fully, but Cruise has already shut down and Luminar went bankrupt after losing contracts, while Waymo and Zoox keep winning customers and talent that autonomy-focused suppliers and units used to have.
Which tire companies are handling the AI era best?
Bridgestone, Michelin and Pirelli all still hold premium and OEM relationships, though Michelin and Bridgestone report volume pressure from Chinese low-cost tire makers like Sailun and Zhongce in commodity segments.
