The call

Gusto sits underneath the AI agents everyone is racing to build, handling the tax filings and compliance work those agents still can't legally own.

Gusto handles payroll, taxes, and HR for over 500,000 small businesses. It is difficult for competitors to copy because Gusto is legally responsible for filing taxes and handling benefits for its customers, and it has built special connections to banks, tax agencies, and insurance companies that would take years to rebuild. Rippling, a newer competitor, is trying to offer a wider bundle of services (payroll plus IT management) to smaller companies, which could push into some of Gusto's territory if Rippling can execute well.

Why
01
AI pressure: ChatGPT, Claude and Slack AI agents (OpenAI, Anthropic, Salesforce). Gusto now runs payroll execution inside ChatGPT, Claude and Slack instead of being replaced by them, as of April 2026. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: ADP and Paychex. Both are far bigger but built for mid-market and enterprise, with sales and pricing that don't fit Gusto's small-business base. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Gusto is the tax-filing agent of record and licensed benefits broker for over 500,000 businesses, a legal role no AI model can take on.

Rippling publicly reports sub-50-employee customer counts or ARR overtaking Gusto's comparable cohort. would confirm direct SMB share loss to Rippling.

Could AI replace Gusto?
Unlikely soon: Gusto shipped inside ChatGPT (January 2026) and Claude and Slack (April 2026) as the payroll execution layer, but it remains the tax filing agent of record and benefits broker for 500,000+ businesses, a regulatory liability AI models cannot assume.
