The call

Hanwha Robotics survives on group orders while Samsung, Doosan, and AI-driven rivals build the layers that could decide who leads cobots next.

Hanwha Robotics makes collaborative robots (arms that work safely alongside people) but is tiny, unprofitable, and makes about $1.7 million in sales. It has one real advantage: sister companies within Hanwha Group buy its robots, but that captive market is not big enough for global success. The real problem is that robots are becoming intelligent through AI vision software that learns and adapts, and Hanwha Robotics does not own that AI layer, another Hanwha sister company does, while Samsung just launched its own robot division, Universal Robots and FANUC (both global giants) are much better funded and already selling smarter robots. The one thing that could change everything: if Hanwha Robotics gains full control of its own AI brain and gets real funding and independence by the end of 2027, it could compete; if it stays starved for resources inside the new corporate structure, it will fade.

Why
01
AI pressure: NC AI's Varco vision-language-action model and similar AI 'brain' layers. The AI that increasingly runs cobots sits with NC AI and sister company Hanwha Ocean, not with Hanwha Robotics itself. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: Samsung RX robotics division. Samsung folded Rainbow Robotics into a new RX division in July 2026, backed by Samsung's capital and AI resources. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Guaranteed internal orders from Hanwha shipyards, hotels, and semiconductor units give it a captive customer base competitors lack.
What would change this call
Samsung RX division announces cobot customer wins or revenue within 12 months of its July 2026 launch. Would show Samsung actively pulling market share away from smaller rivals like Hanwha Robotics.
Hanwha Robotics discloses FY2024/2025 revenue figures or completes the reported PE fundraise. Would show whether it is growing non-group revenue or stalling.
Hanwha Robotics ships a proprietary AI or vision-language-action layer with non-group customers by end of 2027. Would show it closing the AI gap versus Hanwha Ocean's third-party Varco reliance.
Key numbers
  • FY2023 revenue about 2.3 billion won, roughly $1.7M (2023)
  • In talks for 50-100 billion won PE round, unconfirmed (2025-03-24)
  • Samsung RX robotics division launched July 21, 2026 (2026-07-21)
Named risks
  • Subscale, loss-making revenue (~2.3B won FY2023) versus much larger domestic and global rivals. Severity: high
  • AI/vision-language-action layer for physical robotics sits with sister company Hanwha Ocean and third parties, not owned by Hanwha Robotics. Severity: high
  • Group-wide spin-off into new 'Hanwha Machinery & Service Holdings' creates governance and prioritization uncertainty. Severity: medium
  • Reported PE fundraise (50-100B won) as of Mar 2025 remains unconfirmed and could fail to close. Severity: medium
  • Korean robotics sector market cap corrected roughly 50% from Jan to Jul 2026, pressuring valuations and fundraising. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Hanwha Robotics profitable?
No. Hanwha Robotics posted FY2023 revenue of about 2.3 billion won (~$1.7M) and was operating at a loss, versus rival HD Hyundai Robotics' 176.1 billion won in 2023 sales, per a March 24, 2025 mk.co.kr report.
Who owns Hanwha Robotics?
Hanwha Robotics was spun off in October 2023 as a joint venture, 68% owned by Hanwha Corp/Momentum and 32% by Hanwha Hotels & Resorts. A July 15, 2026 shareholder vote (99.95% approval) is moving it into a new entity, 'Hanwha Machinery & Service Holdings.'
Is Hanwha Robotics a safe company to join right now?
It carries real risk: subscale revenue (~2.3B won in 2023), a mid-restructuring into a new holding company as of July 2026, and its AI/vision-language layer sits with sister firm Hanwha Ocean rather than Hanwha Robotics itself, while Samsung's RX division launched July 21, 2026 as a new rival.
Who is Hanwha Robotics' biggest competitor?
Domestically, HD Hyundai Robotics (176.1B won 2023 sales, far above Hanwha's 2.3B won) and Samsung's newly launched RX robotics division (July 21, 2026, backed by roughly 60 trillion won). Globally it also faces Universal Robots, FANUC, ABB and Doosan Robotics.
Could AI replace Hanwha Robotics' cobots?
The risk is commoditization: vision-language-action AI models like NC AI's Varco Vision and AeiROBOT's humanoid ALICE were deployed at sister company Hanwha Ocean's shipyard in June 2026, but that AI 'brain' layer is third-party owned, not built by Hanwha Robotics itself.
Is Hanwha Robotics planning an IPO or raising money?
No confirmed IPO. As of March 24, 2025, Hanwha Robotics was reportedly in talks to raise 50-100 billion won (~$35-70M) from private equity at a valuation under 500 billion won, but no confirmed close has been reported since.
