The call

Hashed's Korean regulatory position is hard to copy, but three and a half years without a new flagship fund and shrinking headcount point toward a firm quietly winding down rather than reloading.

Hashed invests in cryptocurrency and blockchain companies, with a strong grip on South Korean corporate clients and government approval that big American firms like a16z cannot easily get. But the company is shrinking (fewer employees, less website traffic), has not closed a new main fund in over three years despite promising to do so, and operates at a small scale in a market that is cooling down. The entire future depends on whether Hashed can successfully raise and close Fund III; without that announcement in the next year or two, the firm will likely enter a slow wind-down phase where it manages old investments but stops making new bets.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI agents are treated as customers, not predators: Maroo is built to route AI-agent stablecoin transactions on Hashed's own chain. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: a16z crypto, Paradigm, Dragonfly Capital, Multicoin Capital, Pantera Capital. These global crypto funds have far more capital and reach, but Korean securities rules keep them from touching Hashed's local LP and GP base. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Licensed GP status and deep local corporate LP relationships that foreign crypto funds cannot legally replicate in Korea.
What would change this call
Hashed announces a Fund III close of $200M or more within 12 months. Would show LPs still back Hashed despite market contraction.
Maroo mainnet launch and Korean regulatory approval within 6 months. Would show the stablecoin/AI-agent pivot is gaining real traction.
Hashed headcount and web traffic figures over next two quarters. Continued decline would confirm harvest-mode contraction versus rebound.
Key numbers
  • Fund II raised $200M (2021-12)
  • Lost over $3B on Terra/LUNA from own capital (2022-08-04)

  • No confirmed Fund III close since Fund II in December 2021, over 4 years without a new flagship raise. Severity: high
  • Headcount down 2.7% YoY and web traffic down 81% QoQ as of July 2026 signal firm contraction. Severity: medium

  • Industry-wide crypto VC AUM contraction in 2025 pressures Hashed's ability to raise a next flagship fund. Severity: medium
  • Maroo blockchain still lacks confirmed mainnet launch and Korean regulatory approval as of May 2026 testnet stage. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Hashed profitable in 2026?
Hashed is a private VC firm with no public profit figures. It confirmed on 2022-08-04 that it lost more than $3 billion on Terra/LUNA from proprietary capital, and as of 2026-07-16 headcount is down 2.7% year over year, signs of contraction rather than growth.
Is Hashed laying off staff?
Hashed's headcount stood at 36 employees as of 2026-07-16, down 2.7% year over year, with web traffic to hashed.com down 81% quarter over quarter in the same report, indicating a contracting rather than expanding firm.
Who is Hashed's biggest competitor?
Global crypto VCs a16z crypto, Paradigm, Dragonfly Capital, and Multicoin Capital dwarf Hashed by AUM. a16z crypto held about $9.5 billion in 2025 versus Hashed's roughly $320 to 400 million across Fund I and Fund II raised by December 2021.
Could AI replace a firm like Hashed?
Not directly. AI mainly automates research and due diligence support, not capital allocation or LP relationships. Hashed's Maroo blockchain, testnet launched 2026-05-07, is built to serve AI agents transacting on chain rather than being displaced by them.
What is Hashed's Maroo project?
Maroo is a sovereign Layer 1 blockchain from subsidiary Hashed Open Finance for KRW stablecoins and AI agents. Its litepaper was published 2026-01-21 and public testnet launched 2026-05-07, integrating Anthropic's MCP, Claude skills, Gemini CLI, and Cursor.
Did Hashed lose money on Terra LUNA?
Yes. CEO Simon Kim confirmed on 2022-08-04 that Hashed lost more than $3 billion on its early Terra/LUNA position, held through proprietary capital separate from its Fund I and Fund II LP-backed vehicles.
