The call

Hazel raised over $100M, burned through it faster than revenue grew, went bankrupt in 2024, and now exists only as a small team inside Chiquita's TransFRESH.

Hazel Technologies made small plastic inserts that slow fruit ripening and extend shelf life in storage. The company burned through $90 to $110 million in investor money while earning only single-digit to low-double-digit millions in sales, a cash burn that had nothing to do with competitors beating them. AgroFresh Solutions, which has dominated this market for over 40 years with its SmartFresh product, never had to fight Hazel hard because Hazel simply ran out of money first. The company filed for bankruptcy in June 2024 and was bought by TransFRESH, a subsidiary of Chiquita, in May 2026, ending its independent life. The only thing that could matter now is whether Chiquita actually invests in expanding Hazel's Breatheway product into bananas and other tropical fruits, but as of mid-2026 the company was still laying off workers and showed no signs of that commitment.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. Hazel sold physical freshness inserts, not software; AI-based shelf-life prediction stayed academic, never a market threat to it. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: AgroFresh Solutions (SmartFresh/1-MCP). AgroFresh's 40-year-old 1-MCP product already served the same produce customers Hazel chased, leaving Hazel to burn cash for share. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. None as an independent company; whatever protection exists now comes from Chiquita/TransFRESH's balance sheet and distribution, not anything Hazel built.
What would change this call
TransFRESH/Chiquita announces or declines to expand Breatheway into bananas or tropical fruit within 12 months. Shows whether acquirer sees value beyond berries or is winding the tech down.
Hazel/TransFRESH headcount tied to former Hazel operations continues declining past 2026. Indicates ongoing integration wind-down rather than growth investment.
Non-berry legacy customers like Mission Produce or Zespri publicly confirm or drop Breatheway use post-acquisition. Shows whether legacy customer relationships survived the ownership change.

Questions people ask
Is Hazel Technologies still in business?
Not as an independent company. Hazel filed Chapter 11 (Subchapter V) bankruptcy on June 3, 2024, and on May 27, 2026, TransFRESH Corporation, a Chiquita Holdings subsidiary, announced it had acquired Hazel, absorbing its Breatheway technology and scientific team.
Is Hazel Technologies profitable?
No evidence of profitability. In 2021 Chicago Tribune reported revenue was still under $10 million despite $87M+ raised to date, and the company later filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy in June 2024 before being acquired in May 2026.
Who owns Hazel Technologies now?
TransFRESH Corporation, a subsidiary of Chiquita Holdings Limited, acquired Hazel Technologies on May 27, 2026, per a PR Newswire announcement. The acquisition price was not disclosed, and Hazel no longer operates as an independent entity.
Is Hazel Technologies laying off employees?
Headcount has been shrinking. TipRanks reported 34 employees as of June 29, 2026, down 2.86% week-over-week, consistent with post-acquisition integration into TransFRESH following the May 2026 deal.
Could AI replace Hazel Technologies?
Unlikely to displace its core business, which is chemistry and packaging (ethylene-inhibitor sachets, Breatheway membrane film), not software. Machine-learning shelf-life prediction exists only as academic research as of 2026; Hazel never built or marketed such a tool.
Who is Hazel Technologies' biggest competitor?
AgroFresh Solutions, maker of SmartFresh 1-MCP treatment with 40-plus years of post-harvest science history, is the dominant incumbent. Apeel Sciences, with edible coatings distributed in 40-plus retail chains, is also a major named rival as of 2026.
