The call

Hedera has the institutional paperwork of a winner but the transaction volume of a project still waiting for its logos to become users.

Hedera built a public ledger that big companies like IBM and FedEx agree to govern together, and it got official U.S. approval and an ETF. But after seven years, it makes only about $3,200 per day in fees, and rivals like Stellar and Ripple are winning the same kinds of deals that were supposed to be Hedera's strength. The one thing that matters is whether those fancy backers actually start paying to use Hedera instead of just having their names attached to it, or whether Stellar or Ripple grab the next big bank deal first.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI agents could eventually settle payments on any chain, but no AI lab is targeting Hedera specifically yet. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Stellar and Ripple/XRP, plus Canton and Hyperledger permissioned ledgers. Stellar landed a DTCC pilot and Ripple keeps winning SWIFT-adjacent deals while Hedera's marquee wins stay thin. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. 30 Fortune-500 council seats and a digital commodity classification give it institutional legitimacy rivals lack.
What would change this call
Hedera network fees rise materially above ~$3,200/day within 12 months. Would show real paying enterprise/RWA usage beyond token speculation.
Stellar or XRP Ledger announce a new DTCC or SWIFT institutional deployment. Would confirm rivals are capturing the flagship deals Hedera is chasing.
Council members like IBM, FedEx, or Tata launch live production deployments on Hedera. Would show council logos converting into actual paying usage.

Questions people ask
Is Hedera profitable in 2026?
No. Hedera's network generates only about $3,200 per day in transaction fees as of July 19, 2026, seven years after its 2019 mainnet launch, a negligible sum against its roughly $2.9 billion market cap and enterprise ambitions.
Who owns and governs Hedera?
Hedera has no equity owner. It is run by the Hedera Governing Council, a body of up to 39 term-limited enterprises with equal votes, which had about 30 of 39 seats filled as of December 9, 2025, including IBM, FedEx, and Tata Communications.
Is Hedera losing ground to competitors like Stellar or XRP?
Yes. Stellar was selected by DTCC for a tokenized-securities deployment while Hedera's own on-chain fee revenue stayed near $3,200 a day as of July 2026, and rivals XRP/Ripple and Canton are actively courting the same SWIFT and DTCC institutional business.
Could AI replace Hedera's core business?
No, AI does not replace ledger settlement infrastructure. Hedera's moat is its Governing Council, a legal/governance structure of 30-plus Fortune-500-class institutions, and it is instead building AI agent tooling like Agent Kit and Agent Lab (2025 to 2026) as a tailwind, not a threat.
Is HBAR a good investment after its ETF launch?
Mixed. Canary Capital's spot HBAR ETF (ticker HBR) began trading on Nasdaq October 28, 2025, yet HBAR fell about 17-25% year-over-year and remains roughly 75% below its 2021 all-time high as of July 2026, with ETF AUM only $46-60 million.
What is Hedera's biggest competitor?
Stellar, XRP Ledger, and Canton (Digital Asset) are Hedera's closest rivals for institutional and RWA tokenization business; Stellar was chosen by DTCC for a flagship tokenized-securities deal while Canton has raised $135 million (June 2025) with deep bank backing.
