The call

Hex has real customers and cash but is betting an unproven governance layer can outrun Databricks, Snowflake, and cheaper AI-native rivals eating its core feature.

Hex Technologies makes software that uses AI to help people write code and build charts to analyze data, and it has real customers like Reddit and Figma using it today. Right now, it is getting squeezed from two sides: giant companies like Databricks and Snowflake are adding similar AI features to their own products, and smaller AI-native startups like Julius and Powerdrill are doing simpler versions more cheaply. The one thing that could save Hex is if its new 'governed AI context' feature (a way to control how AI analyzes your data safely) becomes something customers truly need and cannot easily get elsewhere, but that feature is brand new and unproven in the market yet.

Why
01
AI pressure: Julius AI, Powerdrill Bloom, Dot AI, plus ChatGPT/Gemini code interpreters. General LLM agents now write the SQL/Python and charts that used to be Hex's core value, for less money. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Databricks Genie and Snowflake Cortex Analyst. Both investors ship AI-BI features inside the warehouse itself, so customers may not need a separate notebook layer at all. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. 1,500+ paying teams and named enterprise logos like Anthropic, Cisco, and Figma who already built workflows around Hex.
What would change this call
Hex's next funding round (mid-2026 onward) discloses valuation and ARR growth. An up-round with strong ARR shows the governed-context moat is working; flat/down shows commoditization winning.
Enterprise buyers publicly switch from Hex to Databricks Genie or Snowflake Cortex Analyst. Would show incumbents' bundled BI/AI tools are displacing Hex in real deals.
Hex discloses actual revenue figures or confirms/denies the $380M PrivCo estimate. Would resolve the wide $20M to $380M revenue uncertainty and clarify true company scale.
Key numbers
  • $70M Series C, May 2025 (2025-05-28)
  • 1,500+ teams use Hex (2025-05-28)
  • Revenue estimates span $6M to $29.7M (2026-07-02)
Named risks
  • Revenue estimates wildly conflict across trackers, from $6M to $380M, undermining reliable valuation. Severity: high
  • Core SQL/Python/charting workflows are directly exposed to commoditization by general LLM agents. Severity: high
  • Governed-context moat (Context Studio, launched Jan 2026) is unproven commercially. Severity: medium
  • Databricks and Snowflake are simultaneously investors and direct AI-analytics competitors. Severity: medium
  • No new funding round disclosed since May 2025 Series C, raising flat/down-round risk. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Hex Technologies profitable in 2026?
Hex is private and has not disclosed audited revenue. Third-party trackers put 2024 revenue estimates anywhere from about $19.8M (Latka) to $42M (Datanyze), with no public profitability disclosure as of July 2026.
Who owns Hex Technologies?
Hex is privately held and venture-backed, founded by Barry McCardel (CEO), Caitlin Colgrove (CTO), and Glen Takahashi, all ex-Palantir. Investors include a16z, Sequoia, Redpoint, Amplify, and rivals-turned-investors Databricks and Snowflake Ventures, per its May 28, 2025 Series C.
Could AI replace Hex Technologies?
Hex's core SQL/Python generation and charting are the exact tasks general LLM agents like ChatGPT and Claude increasingly handle directly. Hex is betting on governed context and semantic-layer integration (Context Studio, launched January 28, 2026) as its defense, but this is commercially unproven.
Who is Hex Technologies' biggest competitor?
Databricks (Genie, shipped June 2024) and Snowflake (Cortex Analyst, public preview August 2024) are both investors in Hex yet ship competing natural-language-to-SQL agents. AI-native tools Julius AI, Powerdrill Bloom, and Dot AI also compete on ease of use.
How much funding has Hex Technologies raised?
Hex raised a $70M Series C on May 28, 2025 led by Avra Capital with a16z, Sequoia, Redpoint, Amplify, and Snowflake Ventures, bringing total funding to roughly $150M-$172M depending on the tracker.
What is Hex Technologies' valuation?
A third-party estimate from Latka (July 2, 2026) puts Hex's valuation at approximately $400M following its 2025 Series C; this figure is not officially confirmed by Hex itself.
