The call

Hexagon still sells the hardware and data that AI software can't replace, but its post-spinoff margins and growth are being watched closely for signs of software-side erosion.

Hexagon makes machines and software that measure physical objects and spaces with extreme precision, used in factories, construction, and surveying. Competitors like Zeiss and Trimble can copy some of what Hexagon does, and artificial intelligence is starting to automate the tedious software work that currently generates profits, which could squeeze margins. The key question is whether Hexagon's profits hold up after it spins off two business units in early 2026; if gross margins keep shrinking while new robotics products fail to gain traction, the stock could become a poor value.

Why
01
AI pressure: Generative AI scan-to-BIM and reality-capture software tools. AI can automate parts of the scan-to-model software workflow, squeezing margins on the software side even as hardware demand holds. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Zeiss, Keyence, Trimble, Topcon, FARO. These peers already sell competing metrology and reality-capture hardware and software, none has taken visible share yet. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Decades of installed hardware, proprietary reality-capture datasets, and compliance-locked workflows in regulated industries and public safety systems.
What would change this call
Hexagon's H1/Q2 2026 results (due late July 2026) show organic growth below 8% or gross margin under 58%. Would show AI-driven software erosion outrunning the hardware and data moat.
Zeiss, Keyence, or Trimble publicly launch a competing AI-native metrology software stack within 12 months. Would show a peer closing the software gap that currently protects Hexagon's margins.
AEON humanoid robotics generates disclosed scale revenue beyond pilots like Schaeffler or Pilatus within 18 months. Would show a new growth line offsetting any core metrology margin compression.
Key numbers
  • Q1 2026 revenue €964M, 8% organic growth (2026-04-23)
  • Q1 2026 gross margin 62.9%, down 150bps YoY (2026-04-23)
  • Cadence bought D&E unit for €2.7B (2026-02-23)
Named risks
  • AI-driven compression of scan-to-BIM and inspection software margins outrunning hardware moat. Severity: high
  • Multiple analyst downgrades (Barclays Underweight, JPM/DB price cuts) signal valuation and margin skepticism, June 2026. Severity: medium
  • Leadership transition with new CEO since July 2025 and new Chairman since April 2026 creates strategic uncertainty. Severity: medium
  • AEON humanoid robotics remains pilot-stage (Schaeffler, Pilatus) with no disclosed revenue at scale. Severity: medium
  • Conflicting headcount and revenue figures across sources post-restructuring complicate investor visibility. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Hexagon AB profitable in 2026?
Yes. Hexagon AB reported Q1 2026 revenue of EUR 964 million with 8% organic growth and a 62.9% gross margin, though margin fell 150bps year over year, as of 23 April 2026 per its earnings call transcript.
Did Hexagon AB lay off employees?
Headcount fell from about 24,500-24,800 pre-spinoff (11 Feb 2026) to roughly 16,000-17,500 by 31 March 2026, but this reflects the Octave Intelligence spin-off (7,200 employees) and Cadence divestiture, not organic layoffs.
Who owns Hexagon AB now?
Hexagon AB trades publicly as Nasdaq Stockholm: HEXA B, historically linked to the Schorling family sphere. Anders Svensson became President and CEO effective 20 July 2025, and Bjorn Rosengren was elected Chairman at the 24 April 2026 AGM, replacing Ola Rollen.
Can AI replace what Hexagon AB does?
Not fully. Hexagon's calibrated hardware (CMMs, laser trackers, Leica scanners) and proprietary reality-capture datasets resist AI substitution, but AI is compressing downstream software labor like scan-to-BIM modeling, per Hexagon's own AI strategy page.
Who is Hexagon AB's biggest competitor?
Hexagon competes in an oligopoly with Carl Zeiss AG, Keyence Corporation, Trimble Inc., Topcon Corporation, and FARO Technologies, per a June 2025 industrial metrology market report naming Hexagon, Zeiss, and Keyence as co-leaders.
Is Hexagon AB a good stock to buy after the Octave spin-off?
Analysts are split. Barclays downgraded Hexagon to Underweight on 18 June 2026, cutting 2026/27 EPS estimates 27%/29% and calling it 'fairly valued at best'; JPMorgan and Deutsche Bank both cut price targets to SEK 85 in the weeks prior.
