HomeToGo
German metasearch site for vacation rentals, now also owns rental properties and management software.
HomeToGo is trying to outrun metasearch decline by becoming a property owner and software vendor, while still losing money at scale.
HomeToGo lets travelers search vacation rentals across many websites in one place, then books them. The original search business is easy to copy (Booking and Google are already doing it), and AI assistants can now skip the search step entirely by talking directly to booking sites. The company bought Interhome, a property management company, to shift toward owning rentals instead of just listing them, but property management has always been a low-profit business, and HomeToGo is still losing roughly €100 million per year. Everything hinges on whether Interhome becomes genuinely profitable in the next few years before the company runs out of cash and is forced into a bad financing deal or gets bought out.
Whether Booking Holdings deepens its Kayak partnership with HomeToGo or shifts to in-house rental aggregation. Would show if a key incumbent still needs HomeToGo or is replacing it.
Google or OpenAI publicly launching an AI travel booking agent that queries hotel/rental APIs directly. Would show metasearch aggregation being bypassed by AI-native booking flows.
- FY2025 revenue €255.5M statutory, up 20.3% YoY
- FY2025 net loss around €100M
- B2B revenue was 66% of group revenue in Q1 2026
- Continued GAAP net losses (~EUR 100M FY2025) despite revenue growth.
- AI travel agents from Google or OpenAI bypassing metasearch aggregation entirely.
- Management transition after COO departure June 30, 2026 with succession unresolved.
- Dependence on EUR 150M bond placement to refinance debt and fund M&A.
- Share price near all-time low, raising dilution or take-private risk.
| Rival | Direction | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Booking Holdings (Kayak) | contesting | HomeToGo feeds 500,000+ units into Kayak's rental search, March 2026, tying its distribution to a rival's platform |
| Airbnb | losing to | Airbnb cited with roughly 7-8M active listings vs HomeToGo's aggregation-only model, as of March 2026 |
| Vrbo (Expedia) | losing to | Vrbo has 2M+ listings across 190 countries, a direct entire-home rental competitor, cited May 2026 |
| Google Vacation Rentals / AI travel agents | gaining on | Frontier AI agents could bypass metasearch entirely, a named structural threat as of 2026 strategy review |
| Vacasa | contesting | Vacasa's property-management economics imploded (2024), a cautionary precedent for HomeToGo's Interhome pivot |
- Is HomeToGo profitable in 2026?
- No. HomeToGo posted a net loss of roughly EUR 100 million in FY2025 and FY2026 guidance targets only adjusted EBITDA of EUR 45-47 million, not GAAP profit. Guidance issued March 19, 2026 projects EUR 400-410M revenue but does not claim positive net income.
- Could AI replace HomeToGo's metasearch business?
- It is a real risk. HomeToGo's core value is search and comparison, exactly what AI travel agents from Google or OpenAI could bypass by querying OTA APIs directly. HomeToGo is racing to build its own AI (Dash, launched Feb 2026) to defend this workflow rather than owning a structural block.
- Who owns HomeToGo and is it publicly traded?
- HomeToGo SE is a public company on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange (ticker HTG), listed via SPAC merger with Lakestar SPAC I in September 2021 at a roughly EUR 1.2 billion valuation. By July 2026 its market cap had fallen to about EUR 166-227 million.
- Who is HomeToGo's biggest competitor?
- Booking.com, Airbnb, and Vrbo (Expedia) are the dominant incumbents; Booking Holdings also owns Kayak, which HomeToGo now feeds over 500,000 rental units into as of a March 2026 partnership, making HomeToGo partly a supply source for a rival's front end.
- Is HomeToGo stock a good investment in 2026?
- Its share price traded near EUR 0.98-1.15 in July 2026, close to an all-time low of EUR 0.92, down sharply from its 2021 SPAC valuation of about EUR 1.2 billion. The company is still net loss-making and discussing a EUR 150 million bond placement for refinancing.
- What is HomeToGo's strategy pivot away from metasearch?
- HomeToGo acquired property manager Interhome (closed August 28, 2025, EV about $169M) and Kraushaar, unifying them as 'HomeToGo Originals' in June 2026. B2B and owned-supply revenue reached 66% of group revenue by Q1 2026, up from 63% in FY2025.
