The call

Honda's motorcycle and hybrid base holds steady while its abandoned EV bet and unproven software platform leave it exposed to faster-moving Chinese and software-native rivals.

Honda makes cars, motorcycles, and engines, and has strong factories, dealer networks, and financing that are hard for startups to replicate quickly. But the company just posted its first loss in nearly 70 years after abandoning its plan to make only electric cars by 2040, and Chinese rivals like BYD are beating Honda in Asia with better software and faster product updates, while Tesla has proven electric cars can have smarter self-driving features. The big change would come if Honda successfully launches 15 new hybrid models by 2030 and finishes a software platform deal with Nissan and Mitsubishi, or if U.S. tariffs tank its profits before any of that pays off.

Why
01
AI pressure: Tesla and Chinese EV makers (BYD) with software-defined vehicle platforms. AI-driven ADAS and software update cycles from Tesla and BYD outpace Honda's ASIMO OS, still not in production until late 2026. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: BYD and other Chinese EV OEMs; Toyota's hybrid dominance. Chinese software-native OEMs take Asia share faster than Honda's hybrid pivot can offset, while Toyota avoided Honda's costly EV reversal. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Motorcycle scale (22.1M units), dealer and financing networks, and hybrid manufacturing depth Chinese EV makers cannot quickly replicate.
What would change this call
Honda's Q1 FY2027 earnings released around August 5-10, 2026. Shows whether the FY2026 net loss was a one-time write-off or an ongoing profitability problem.
Whether Nissan/Mitsubishi ECU and software collaboration is formally announced. Would show Honda gaining a shared software platform to close the SDV gap with Chinese and Tesla rivals.
Honda's automobile unit sales and Asia market share figures in FY2027 reports. Would show whether Chinese EV OEMs continue taking share faster than Honda's hybrid pivot can offset.

Questions people ask
Is Honda Motor profitable in 2026?
No. Honda posted a net loss of ¥423.9B (~$2.7B) for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2026, its first full-year loss since listing in 1957, driven by ¥1.45T-2.5T in EV-related write-offs after abandoning its 100%-EV-by-2040 target on March 12, 2026. It still maintained its ¥70/share dividend.
Who owns Honda Motor?
Honda is an independent, publicly traded company with no controlling parent, listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange (7267) and NYSE (HMC). A planned ~$60B merger with Nissan collapsed in February 2025; as of July 8, 2026 the two remain in narrower project-based collaboration talks.
Could AI replace Honda's engineers?
Honda's own May 2026 'Triple Half' initiative uses AI and digital engineering to halve development cost, time, and engineering workload as part of a ¥6.2T three-year plan targeting 15 hybrid models by FY2030, showing AI is compressing internal engineering labor rather than being an outside replacement threat.
Who is Honda's biggest competitor?
Toyota remains Honda's closest domestic rival, but Honda itself stated on March 12, 2026 that Chinese and other software-native EV makers are eroding its competitiveness in Asia through faster software cycles and stronger ADAS capabilities.
Did the Honda-Nissan merger happen?
No. Nissan rejected Honda's proposal to become a wholly owned subsidiary in February 2025, collapsing the planned merger. As of July 8, 2026, Nissan CEO Ivan Espinosa said news on a narrower project-based partnership covering shared ECUs is 'coming soon.'
Is Honda exiting the EV business?
Not entirely. On March 12, 2026 Honda canceled three North American EV models, including its lead Zero-series vehicle, and dropped its 100%-EV-by-2040 target, pivoting resources toward 15 new hybrid models by FY2030 while still allocating ¥0.8T to EV development.
