The call

HLB sits inside a licensed oligopoly where new digital banks remain small and AI is reshaping its cost base, not its customer base.

Hong Leong Bank takes deposits from people and businesses across Malaysia and four other countries, and lends money out to earn interest. It is hard to copy because the Malaysian government only lets a small number of banks do this work, and you need government permission to start a new one. Bigger banks like Maybank and Public Bank cannot just take over because the same rules stop them. Newer digital banks like Boost and GXBank got permission a few years ago but are still small and have not taken many customers away. The one thing that could change this is if Malaysia's government decides to let many more banks compete, or if the newer digital banks grow much faster and pull deposits away from Hong Leong.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI trims HLB's own collections and contact-centre costs rather than threatening its banking license or deposit base. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Malaysian digital banks (GXBank, Boost, KAF, AEON, YTL/Sea). Digital banks licensed since 2022 are live but still subscale, with no visible pull of deposits or SME customers from HLB yet. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. A Bank Negara Malaysia commercial banking license, RM118B+ in individual deposits, and branch distribution across five countries.
What would change this call
GXBank, Boost or AEON Bank publishes retail deposit share nearing 5% in Bank Negara data. Would show Malaysian digital banks finally taking real share from incumbents like HLB.
HLB's individual deposit growth trails Maybank or Public Bank for 2-3 straight quarters. Would show HLB losing core deposit customers to larger rivals.
HLB completes Bank of Chengdu stake divestment and reports FY2027 results. Would show whether the associate earnings volatility resolves or worsens.

Questions people ask
Is Hong Leong Bank profitable in 2025?
Yes. Hong Leong Bank's FY2025 (year ended 30 June 2025) operating profit before allowances rose 14.2% year on year to RM3,919 million, with non-interest income up 33.4% to RM1,471 million, per its own results announcement dated 2025-08-26.
Could AI replace Hong Leong Bank?
No. AI automates cost centers like collections and contact-centre work (2.9 million AI-handled interactions in FY2024/25), but Hong Leong Bank holds a Bank Negara Malaysia banking license and RM118.2 billion individual deposit franchise (as of March 2025) that AI systems cannot replicate or obtain.
Who owns Hong Leong Bank?
Hong Leong Financial Group Berhad held approximately 61.8% of Hong Leong Bank as of late 2025, with Employees Provident Fund holding roughly 8.4% to 10.5%; the group is ultimately linked to Malaysia's Quek family, per reporting dated 2025-12-29.
Is Hong Leong Bank losing customers to digital banks like GXBank or Boost?
No clear evidence yet. As of March 2025 Hong Leong Bank's individual deposits grew 7.5% year on year to RM118.2 billion, and total assets crossed RM300 billion for the first time in 9MFY25, showing no material share loss to Malaysia's newer digital banks.
What is Hong Leong Bank's biggest competitor?
Domestically, Hong Leong Bank is grouped with CIMB, RHB Bank, AmBank, Bank Islam, and AFFIN Bank as peers, while Malayan Banking (Maybank) and Public Bank are the larger incumbents; Malaysia's licensed digital banks (GXBank, Boost) remain a nascent, subscale threat as of 2025.
Why did Hong Leong Bank's profit drop in early 2025?
Hong Leong Bank's 3QFY25 net profit fell 9.4% year on year to RM946.69 million, mainly due to a one-off dilution loss of about RM408 million tied to its Bank of Chengdu stake conversion, reported 2025-05-28.
