The call

Huawei turned a sanctions cutoff into forced self-sufficiency, and now grows slowly but profitably behind chip and OS walls that China's rules help keep standing.

Huawei makes phones, networking equipment, and cloud services, and it now builds its own computer chips for artificial intelligence work. It is hard to replace because the Chinese government favors buying from Huawei instead of foreign companies, and the United States has cut off Huawei's access to advanced chips from Nvidia and other American suppliers, forcing Huawei to build everything itself from scratch. The key thing to watch is whether Huawei can actually finish and ship its new AI chips (called Ascend 950DT and Kirin) on schedule in late 2026, because if those projects get delayed, investors will wonder if Huawei's self-made chip strategy can really work.

Why
01
AI pressure: Alibaba Cloud and other AI-native Chinese hyperscalers. AI workloads favor elastic cloud-native rivals, pressuring Huawei's shrinking cloud unit while its Ascend chips ride the same AI wave. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Nvidia, if Washington eases China export limits. Nvidia chips could flood China's AI market if US export controls loosen, undercutting Ascend's protected home turf. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Forced self-sufficiency in chips (HiSilicon), OS (HarmonyOS), and memory, locked in by US export bans and Chinese state buying preference.
What would change this call
Huawei launches the Ascend 950DT chip in Q4 2026 as scheduled. Shows Huawei can execute its AI chip roadmap without leading-edge lithography.
Fall 2026 Kirin chips with LogicFolding architecture ship on schedule. Tests whether Huawei's chip design workaround claims hold up in real products.
Seres reports its guided H1 2026 net loss of CNY 1.5 to 1.8 billion for the HIMA auto alliance. Would confirm profitability strain in Huawei's smart-car partner model.

Questions people ask
Is Huawei profitable in 2025?
Yes. Huawei's FY2025 annual report shows net profit of CNY 68.0 billion, up 8.6% year over year, on revenue of CNY 880.9 billion (up 2.2%), as reported March 31, 2026.
Could AI replace Huawei's cloud business?
Huawei Cloud revenue fell 3.5% in 2025 as AI-native hyperscalers pressured margins, but AI is mostly a tailwind elsewhere: Ascend chip and automotive revenue grew 72.1% in 2025, per Huawei's own FY2025 report.
Who owns Huawei?
Huawei is privately owned by roughly 169,054 current and retired employees via an internal ESOP under Huawei Investment & Holding Co. Founder Ren Zhengfei's personal stake was just 0.59% as of December 30, 2025.
Is Nvidia or Alibaba Huawei's biggest competitor?
It depends on segment. Nvidia dominates AI chips globally (over 80% share in 2024) but is barred from China; Alibaba leads China's cloud market with about 33% share versus Huawei's 17-18% as of mid-2025.
Is it risky to join Huawei given US sanctions?
US pressure is real, the FCC revoked Huawei equipment authorizations on June 30, 2026, but the company kept growing domestically, reaching 213,000 employees by end-2025 and regaining the top China smartphone spot in Q2 2026.
Will Huawei overtake Apple in smartphones?
Huawei already leads Apple in China: it held 22.6-23% of the China smartphone market in Q2 2026 versus Apple's roughly 18-19%, per Omdia data published July 14, 2026, even as the overall China market shrank.
