The call

Huolala still dominates matching volume in China, but regulators are squeezing its take rate and its IPO keeps stalling, so the marketplace is stronger than the equity story right now.

Huolala runs a two-sided marketplace that matches truck drivers with shippers for deliveries within Chinese cities, and it controls about 60% of that market. The company is profitable and has beaten back rivals like DiDi and Manbang for over five years, but its advantage is fragile: drivers and shippers can switch to competitors easily, and the Chinese government just cut the fees Huolala can charge from 11% to 9%, which will shrink profits from 61% to about 50%. The biggest question is whether Huolala can actually go public (it has tried six times and failed), and if it does, whether tighter regulation and easier switching will let competitors like Full Truck Alliance or DiDi Freight steal away its drivers and customers before the company can reach scale and profitability as a public company.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. Matching trucks to loads is a dispatch problem, not a language problem, so AI models don't directly replace the marketplace. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Full Truck Alliance, DiDi Freight, SF Intra-City. Rivals already run live intra-city freight apps in China, and drivers can switch platforms with almost no cost. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Roughly 60% share of Mainland China intra-city freight GTV and 1.4 to 1.5 million monthly drivers give it matching liquidity rivals lack.
What would change this call
SAMR-mandated take rate falls below ~9% or keeps drifting down through 2027. Regulator is structurally compressing Huolala's margin beyond the current floor.
Full Truck Alliance, DiDi Freight, or SF Intra-City report material driver/shipper volume gains in China intra-city freight. Low switching costs are letting rivals actually capture Huolala's share, not just theorize about it.
Huolala's 7th HKEX IPO filing (April 2026) clears or lapses by January 2027. Shows whether public markets accept the margin and regulatory story after six prior failed attempts.

Questions people ask
Is Huolala profitable in 2025?
Yes. Per its HKEX draft prospectus, Huolala's parent Lalatech Holdings reported adjusted (non-IFRS) profit of US$560.3 million in 2025, up from US$500.8 million in 2024 and US$390.6 million in 2023, marking three consecutive profitable years.
Has Huolala's Hong Kong IPO gone through yet?
No. Huolala's parent Lalatech Holdings filed for a Hong Kong listing a seventh time on April 30, 2026, after six prior prospectuses lapsed without a hearing since the first filing in March 2023, per a May 2, 2026 report.
Who owns Huolala?
Founder Chow Shing-Yuk controls Huolala through a dual-class structure, holding 76.97% of voting rights and a 25.05% economic stake as of the April 2026 HKEX filing. The company remains private and venture-backed pending its Hong Kong listing attempt.
Could AI replace Huolala's dispatch system?
Huolala already runs its own algorithmic dispatch and dynamic pricing, but this is now a regulatory liability rather than a moat: in June 2026 China's SAMR ordered it to stop using algorithms to unreasonably lower freight prices paid to drivers.
Who is Huolala's biggest competitor?
Domestically, DiDi Freight (entered June 2020), Full Truck Alliance, and SF Intra-City are cited as ongoing rivals. A weaker former rival, Kuaigou Dache, saw 2023 revenue fall 2.6% and post an RMB 1.1 billion loss, with its founder departing.
How big is Huolala's market share?
Huolala states it holds roughly 53.1% of global closed-loop freight GTV and about 61% of Mainland China closed-loop freight GTV as of 2025, according to a company announcement cited June 20, 2026, though margins on that volume are shrinking.
