The call

Hyundai is losing ground to Chinese EVs everywhere tariffs don't block them, and its U.S. profit engine depends on those tariffs holding.

Hyundai Motor Group builds and sells cars globally through brands like Hyundai and Kia, with factories, dealerships, and financing services in over 190 countries. The company is hard to replace because it owns massive factories (like its Ulsan plant in Korea), has thousands of dealerships worldwide, and holds government certifications that take years for competitors to earn. But profits fell sharply in early 2026 because of U.S. tariffs adding costs, factory fires disrupting supply, labor strikes in Korea, and Chinese automakers like BYD taking sales in China and Europe. The key question is whether the profit drop is temporary (like a bad quarter that will pass) or permanent (because Chinese companies will keep eating into Hyundai's market share everywhere, including North America where Hyundai makes most of its money).

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI is a tool Hyundai buys for robotics and factory automation, not a force taking its car buyers away. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: BYD and other Chinese EV makers. BYD already cut Hyundai's China sales 36.9% and Europe sales 10.9%, and just passed Lexus and Volvo in Korea's own import market. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. U.S. tariffs on Chinese EVs keep BYD out of Hyundai's most profitable market, plus its own factories, dealer network, and financing arm.
What would change this call
Whether Chinese automakers gain measurable U.S. market share if tariffs ease or shift. Would show BYD-style competition breaching Hyundai's protected North American profit engine.
Hyundai's operating margin over the next 2-3 quarters versus the 6.3-7.3% full-year target. Would show whether tariff and strike-driven margin compression is temporary or structural.
Resolution outcome of the July 2026 Korean union strikes and August 2026 CID management update. Would show whether labor disruption and production shortfalls are contained or recurring.
