The call

Hyundai Steel keeps running on guaranteed orders from its own car-making parent, but profit margins stay razor thin and its US expansion is racing a newly merged, larger American rival.

Hyundai Steel is a South Korean steelmaker that supplies about 25 to 27 percent of Hyundai Motor's steel and 13 to 17 percent of Kia's steel, plus sells on the open market. The company is hard to replace because Hyundai and Kia need special steel for cars and have already certified Hyundai Steel as a supplier, which takes years to do with a rival like POSCO or global competitors such as Nippon Steel and ArcelorMittal. The catch is that profits are razor-thin (almost zero in 2025), prices bounce with the commodity market, and the company is building a huge new mill in Louisiana that could drain cash and create risk if construction goes wrong or if a competitor like the newly merged Nippon Steel and US Steel grabs more business before that mill opens in 2026.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI tools may speed up mill scheduling or design work, but steelmaking demand is not something a chatbot or agent can replace. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Nippon Steel-US Steel (merged), POSCO, Nucor. Nippon Steel-US Steel's 2025 merger creates a bigger US automotive-steel rival right as Hyundai races to open its own Louisiana mill. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Hyundai Motor and Kia together own over 40% of the company and are locked in as automotive-steel customers by qualification requirements.
What would change this call
Louisiana mill construction proceeds on schedule and budget through Q3 2026 groundbreaking. Shows the captive-demand growth bet for US automotive steel is executing as planned.
Nippon Steel-US Steel combined entity announces new automotive-grade supply deals with Hyundai or Kia in the US before 2029. Would show the merger is displacing Hyundai Steel's future US captive share before its mill opens.
CIT rules on Section 232 tariff dockets 22-00170 and 23-00211. Would clarify tariff protection underpinning Hyundai Steel's US market pricing power.

Questions people ask
Is Hyundai Steel profitable in 2025?
Barely. FY2025 revenue was KRW 22.73 trillion (down 2.1% YoY), operating profit rose 37.4% YoY to KRW 219.2 billion, but net income was only about KRW 1.4 billion, essentially breakeven on $15.8B in sales, as of December 31, 2025.
Who owns Hyundai Steel?
Hyundai Steel is publicly listed (KRX: 004020) but controlled via Hyundai Motor Group's cross-shareholding: Hyundai Motor Company holds roughly 25-27% and Kia Corporation roughly 13-17%, with Chairman Euisun Chung holding about 1.95% directly, as of early-to-mid 2026.
Could AI replace Hyundai Steel's workforce?
Not the core business. AI/robotics are automating inspection, tagging, and packaging, like the wire-rod tagging robot deployed at Dangjin in December 2025, but the capital-intensive blast furnace and EAF steelmaking base and captive automotive-grade supply relationships with Hyundai and Kia remain untouched by frontier AI.
Who is Hyundai Steel's biggest competitor?
Domestically, POSCO, which has a market cap around $48.6 billion as of June 2026 versus Hyundai Steel's roughly KRW 3.65 trillion (about $2.6B). Globally, ArcelorMittal ($61.35B 2025 revenue) and the Nippon Steel-US Steel merger (completed late 2024) threaten its US automotive-grade steel share.
What is Hyundai Steel's Louisiana plant and when will it open?
Hyundai Steel announced a $5.8 billion electric-arc-furnace steel mill in Donaldsonville, Louisiana on March 24, 2025, targeting 2.7 million metric tons per year capacity and over 1,300 direct US jobs. Construction is set to start Q3 2026 with commercial production targeted for 2029.
How exposed is Hyundai Steel to US tariffs?
Highly exposed. Section 232 steel tariffs sat at a 50% baseline as of June 2025, with a negotiated 15% floor for some Korean derivative products from mid-2026. Hyundai Steel also has active litigation, Hyundai Steel Co. v. United States, with a public court filing as recent as May 2026.
