The call

Increase sits deep inside real money movement for Ramp, Gusto, and Stripe, but stablecoin agent-payment rails are forming without it in the room.

Increase is a company that helps other startups send and receive money through official banking channels like the Federal Reserve and credit card networks. Right now, it is hard to replace because it has special government licenses, is built deeply into customers' software, and banks trust it to handle money correctly. But new AI-powered payment systems from companies like Amazon, Visa, and Mastercard are being built to move money in different ways starting in mid-2026, and Increase is not publicly part of those new systems yet, which means customers might not need Increase if AI handles payments automatically instead.

Why
01
AI pressure: x402, AWS AgentCore, Visa Intelligent Commerce, Mastercard Agent Pay. New AI-agent payment rails are launching from Visa, Mastercard, and AWS, and Increase has no visible role in any of them yet. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Stripe Treasury and Issuing. Stripe sells its own Treasury and Issuing APIs, but its conflicts of interest keep it from serving neutral rivals like Ramp, Pipe, and Check. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Direct regulatory hookups to the Fed, The Clearing House, and Visa, plus production code running inside Ramp, Gusto, and Stripe itself.
What would change this call
Increase joins or ships support for x402, AWS AgentCore, Visa Intelligent Commerce, or Mastercard Agent Pay by Q1 2027. Shows Increase is extending its rail participation into AI-agent payment infrastructure.
Federal Reserve or FDIC ruling on Buckley's Twin City Bank stake, or Increase pursuing a direct bank charter. Would signal a shift from multi-bank partner model toward owning its own charter.
Regulatory or capital trouble at sponsor banks Grasshopper, First Internet Bank, Twin City Bank, or Core Bank. Would show sponsor-bank risk spilling over onto Increase, echoing the Synapse/Evolve 2024 precedent.
Key numbers
  • Customers move hundreds of billions of dollars a year through Increase (2026)
  • Named production customers include Ramp, Stripe, Gusto, Pipe, Check (2026)

  • Dependence on sponsor banks (Grasshopper, First Internet Bank, Twin City Bank, Core Bank) exposed to sector blowups like Synapse/Evolve in 2024. Severity: high
  • No disclosed funding round or valuation, leaving capital position opaque versus funded peers. Severity: medium
  • BaaS sector consolidation and M&A wave (e.g., Capital One-Brex deal) could pressure or absorb smaller players. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Increase profitable in 2026?
No public financials exist. As of a 2022-era interview Increase was described as self-funded with no outside venture capital disclosed, and no revenue figures have been published as of July 2026, so profitability cannot be confirmed.
Who owns Increase, the banking API company?
Increase is privately held, founded in 2020 by Darragh Buckley, Stripe's first employee. PitchBook lists it as venture-backed with 14 investors on record as of 2026, but no priced round, lead investor, or valuation has been disclosed publicly.
Could AI replace Increase's banking infrastructure?
Unlikely directly. Increase is a regulated, direct participant with the Fed, The Clearing House, and Visa, a role an LLM cannot assume. The real threat is AI-agent payment rails like x402 and AWS AgentCore, which Increase has not joined as of July 2026.
Who is Increase's biggest competitor?
Stripe (Treasury/Issuing) is the dominant adjacent incumbent, though it faces conflicts serving Increase's customers like Ramp. Direct BaaS peers include Unit, Synctera, Treasury Prime, and Column as of 2026.
Has Increase raised venture funding?
No public funding round has been confirmed. PitchBook lists Increase as venture-backed with 14 investors, but as of July 2026 no priced round, lead investor, or valuation figure has been disclosed.
Is Increase involved in AI-agent payment rails like x402?
As of July 2026, Increase was not named as a participant in the x402 Foundation, AWS AgentCore Payments, Visa Intelligent Commerce, or Mastercard Agent Pay, all of which launched between May and July 2026 without it.
