Indodax
Indodax is Indonesia's largest crypto exchange, trading rupiah for Bitcoin and other tokens under an OJK license.
Indodax still holds Indonesia's biggest crypto user base, but a Binance-backed rival, a shrinking market, and an open OJK probe into missing funds are testing whether that base holds.
Indodax is a cryptocurrency trading platform in Indonesia where people buy and sell digital coins. It once had protection from a government license and local banking connections that competitors could not easily copy, but that advantage is disappearing: Binance owns a rival called Tokocrypto that has roughly equal market share and follows the same rules. The real problem is bigger than rivalry. Indonesian crypto exchanges are generally unprofitable, customers are leaving for cheaper foreign platforms, the company suffered a 22 million dollar security breach in September 2024 that outside firms had to discover for them, and government regulators are investigating whether 600 million Indonesian rupiah in customer money went missing. One change that could matter: if a new product launching in April 2026 using Solana blockchain technology actually attracts traders and cannot be copied by Tokocrypto, it might give Indodax room to recover, but there is no sign this will happen.

- Nationwide crypto volume fell from IDR 650T to IDR 482.23T
- 72% of licensed Indonesian crypto exchanges unprofitable
- OJK investigation into ~IDR 600M missing funds could escalate into major penalties or reputational damage.
- Repeat security incident after Sept 2024 hack, given reliance on external firms for breach detection.
- Sector-wide volume decline (~26% YoY in 2025) and 72% exchange unprofitability squeezing margins.
- Tightening regulation (POJK 23/2025, Law No. 4 of 2026) raising compliance costs and licensing burden.
- Binance-owned Tokocrypto and new state-linked ICEx infrastructure eroding Indodax's regulatory moat.

- Is Indodax profitable in 2026?
- Indodax does not disclose audited financials, but as of January 2026, 72% of Indonesia's licensed crypto exchanges, a group that includes Indodax, were reported unprofitable, and Indodax's own CEO cited user outflows to cheaper foreign platforms as a headwind to revenue.
- Was Indodax hacked?
- Yes. In September 2024, Indodax suffered a hot-wallet breach with losses commonly cited at around $22M across ETH, TRX, BTC, and MATIC. The breach was detected by outside security firms like SlowMist and Cyvers, not Indodax's own systems, before operations were paused and restored.
- Who owns Indodax?
- Indodax is a private company founded in 2014 as Bitcoin Indonesia by Oscar Darmawan and William Sutanto. It took an East Ventures funding round in November 2017. William Sutanto, previously CTO, became CEO in May 2025, succeeding co-founder Darmawan. No public valuation exists.
- Is it safe to keep funds on Indodax right now?
- There is active regulatory scrutiny: Indonesia's OJK opened an investigation in January 2026 into roughly IDR 600 million in missing customer funds, which Indodax attributed to external phishing rather than a system breach. This follows a $22M hack in September 2024.
- Who is Indodax's biggest competitor?
- Tokocrypto, owned by Binance, is Indodax's closest rival. As of mid-2023 data, Tokocrypto held about 43% domestic trading-volume share versus Indodax's 42%, and Tokocrypto has since joined Indonesia's new state-linked ICEx clearing and custody infrastructure as of July 2026.
- Could AI replace Indodax?
- Not for its core function: Indodax's OJK licensing and IDR banking rails are jurisdiction-specific and not AI-replicable. But AI is already eating at its edges; the 2024 hack was caught by outside AI-driven security firms, not Indodax, and its slow customer support is flagged as chatbot-vulnerable.
