The call

Insomniac's fate rides on Sony's continued investment and its lock on Spider-Man, not on any AI or outside rival.

Insomniac Games makes Spider-Man video games for PlayStation consoles. The company has a special deal with Marvel that lets only them make these games, which other video game makers cannot copy because the deal is locked in through at least March 2026. Since Sony owns Insomniac completely, the company is financially protected even if a game sells poorly. The one thing that could change everything is if Marvel and Sony decide not to renew the exclusive deal when it expires, which would let other game makers create Spider-Man games too.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI tools may speed up asset creation or QA internally, but no AI product replaces licensed AAA game production. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: None apparent. As a wholly-owned Sony studio, its main risk is internal budget or headcount decisions, not outside takeover. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. An exclusive Marvel Spider-Man game license renewed through at least March 2026 plus Sony ownership.

Questions people ask
Is Insomniac Games profitable?
Insomniac is a wholly-owned Sony subsidiary and does not report standalone financials; its results are folded into Sony Interactive Entertainment's Game and Network Services segment. Traction is measured via unit sales instead, e.g. Spider-Man 2 hit 16 million units by November 2025.
Could AI replace Insomniac Games developers?
No. Sony disclosed in May 2026 it uses an internal tool called Mockingbird for facial animation at sibling studios, framing AI as augmentation for animation and QA, not replacement, stating human creativity 'must remain at the center.'
Who owns Insomniac Games?
Sony Interactive Entertainment owns Insomniac Games outright, having acquired it in 2019 for approximately $229 million as the 14th studio in what is now PlayStation Studios.
Is it safe to take a job at Insomniac Games?
There is some risk: Sony cut about 900 PlayStation jobs in February 2024, hitting Insomniac and Naughty Dog. But headcount recovered to roughly 664 by December 2025, up 13.2% year over year, per Revelio Labs.
Who is Insomniac Games' biggest competitor?
Insomniac has no direct external competitor for its core IP; it holds an exclusive Marvel Spider-Man video game license since 2014. Its closest peers are sibling Sony first-party studios like Naughty Dog and Sucker Punch.
When does Marvel's Wolverine come out?
Marvel's Wolverine, developed by Insomniac Games, is confirmed for release on September 15, 2026, with the date locked in as of February 24, 2026 and a gameplay reveal shown at the June 2, 2026 State of Play.
