The call

IAG's business sits behind regulatory licensing and locked-in reinsurance and distribution deals, with AI showing up so far as an internal claims tool rather than a rival's weapon.

IAG sells car, home, and business insurance across Australia and New Zealand through brands like NRMA and RACQ. It is hard to replace because the government only gives insurance licenses to established, well-run companies, which keeps out tech startups and AI-only competitors. Suncorp is a real rival with similar market share, but neither company faces a threat from AI taking over insurance itself, since AI cannot get a government license or hold billions in customer claims money. The one thing that could hurt IAG is if Australia gets hit by more big storms and fires, which would force the company to pay out huge claims and shrink profits; regulators also blocked one merger, so growth through buying smaller rivals may be off the table.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. IAG uses its own AI claims tool CASI to speed payouts; no AI-only rival can hold an APRA insurance license to compete. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Suncorp Group (AAMI, GIO, Apia, Shannons, Bingle). Suncorp runs a full competing book across the same home and motor lines with roughly a quarter of the market, but no evidence IAG is losing share to it. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. APRA licensing blocks new entrants, reinsurance is locked with Berkshire Hathaway and Munich Re through 2029, and distribution deals like the RACQ 25 year tie run for decades.
What would change this call
ACCC's final decision on IAG's RAC WA acquisition (from Dec 2025). Blocking growth-by-acquisition would show regulators capping IAG's expansion path.
IAG's FY26 results (~Aug 2026) versus its A$1,550m-A$1,750m insurance profit guidance. A miss would show catastrophe costs or reinsurance terms eroding margins.
Outcome of 2026 reinsurance renewal cycle with Berkshire Hathaway, Munich Re, Swiss Re. Worse terms or refusal to renew would show the reinsurance moat weakening.

Questions people ask
Is Insurance Australia Group (IAG) profitable in 2025 and 2026?
Yes. IAG posted FY25 net profit after tax of A$1,359m, up 51.3% on FY24, as of 30 June 2025. However 1H FY26 NPAT fell to A$505m from A$778m a year earlier, hit by a one-off A$174m RACQ-related weather cost, reported 12 February 2026.
Could AI replace IAG as an insurer?
No. IAG uses generative AI (its CASI claims tool, scaled from H2 2024) to speed claims processing, but underwriting risk requires an APRA insurance license, ~A$20bn capital base, and reinsurance treaties with Berkshire Hathaway, Munich Re and Swiss Re through 2029, none of which AI can replicate.
Who is IAG's biggest competitor?
Suncorp Group (AAMI, GIO, Apia, Shannons, Bingle) is IAG's closest peer, holding roughly 25-27% of the Australian general insurance market versus IAG's ~29%, per an ACCC filing dated 11 December 2025 on the blocked RAC WA deal.
Did IAG succeed in acquiring RAC Insurance in Western Australia?
No. IAG agreed in May 2025 to buy RAC WA's insurance arm for A$1.35bn, but on 11 December 2025 the ACCC formally opposed the deal, citing resulting WA market shares of 55-65% in motor and 50-60% in home insurance.
Who owns Insurance Australia Group?
IAG is a widely-held public company on the ASX with no controlling parent. Berkshire Hathaway, via National Indemnity Company, has held roughly a 3.7% equity stake since a $500m strategic partnership announced 15 June 2015, alongside a long-term reinsurance quota-share renewed through 31 December 2029.
What is IAG's market share in Australia?
IAG held approximately 29% of the Australian general insurance market as of its FY25 results dated 13 August 2025, making it the largest single player, with Suncorp close behind at roughly 25-27% per a December 2025 ACCC filing.
