Intelsat
Global satellite operator, now a wholly-owned SES subsidiary after July 2025 acquisition.
Intelsat now runs inside SES with government contracts and orbital rights as protection, while Starlink keeps taking aviation and maritime deals in the open market.
Intelsat provides satellite communication services for television, internet, aviation, and shipping, and was bought by a larger satellite company called SES in July 2025. The combined business has real advantages in government and military work because those customers need licensed, secure, and regulated satellites, but Starlink is winning fast in aviation and maritime communication by offering cheaper, faster service with its newer satellite network. The biggest question over the next year is whether SES can cut costs and make money from its new satellite launches, and whether Starlink will keep taking more government contracts that used to go to companies like Intelsat.
A major airline (e.g. Delta, United, Lufthansa) switches inflight Wi-Fi from Intelsat/SES to Starlink. Confirms Starlink is capturing flagship aviation accounts from Intelsat's core business.
O3b mPOWER satellites 11-13 launch and enter commercial service in H2 2026 as scheduled. Shows the MEO growth platform underpinning the moat is on track, not delayed.
- SES paid ~$2.6bn cash plus CVRs to acquire Intelsat
- Combined SES-Intelsat net leverage: 3.9x EBITDA
- IS-33e satellite total loss, uninsured, Oct 2024
- Uninsured in-orbit satellite failure recurring (IS-33e total loss Oct 2024, sister IS-29e failed 2019).
- Starlink taking flagship aviation, maritime, and government accounts from former Intelsat base.
- Integration underperforming guidance, combined leverage 3.9x vs sub-3x target as of Dec 2025.
- O3b mPOWER MEO satellites 11-13 launch delay or failure risk in H2 2026.
| Rival | Direction | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Starlink (SpaceX) | losing to | 97.1% of global satellite speedtest samples vs Viasat 1.7%, Q3 2025 per Ookla |
| Starlink (SpaceX) | losing to | ~67% satellite broadband market share end of 2024 per Satellite Today |
| Viasat-Inmarsat | contesting | Competes directly in aviation, maritime, government connectivity post-2023 Inmarsat merger |
| Eutelsat-OneWeb | contesting | Merged GEO-LEO rival competing for same government and connectivity contracts since Sept 2023 |
- Is Intelsat still an independent company?
- No. SES S.A. completed its acquisition of Intelsat on July 17, 2025 for approximately $2.6 billion cash plus contingent value rights. Intelsat is now a wholly-owned subsidiary fully consolidated into SES's financial statements, with no independent stock or standalone financing.
- Is Intelsat profitable in 2025?
- Standalone results are no longer reported. Combined SES-Intelsat FY2025 results, released March 2, 2026, showed net leverage of 3.9x Adjusted EBITDA, and CEO Adel Al-Saleh said performance came in below initial expectations for the first year of the combined company.
- Who owns Intelsat now?
- SES S.A. (Euronext: SESG), a Luxembourg satellite operator, owns Intelsat outright after closing its acquisition on July 17, 2025. Intelsat exists only as a consolidated brand and business segment inside SES, not as a separately traded entity.
- Could AI replace Intelsat's business?
- Unlikely soon. Intelsat/SES's moat is physical: owned GEO orbital slots, spectrum licenses, and government/defense contracts requiring security clearance, plus over €8 billion combined backlog as of July 17, 2025. AI (per ESA's May 2025 ConstellAI research) only automates internal fleet-management tasks, not the regulated asset base.
- Is Intelsat losing to Starlink?
- Yes, in growth segments. Starlink captured 97.1% of global satellite broadband speedtest samples in Q3 2025 per Ookla, versus Viasat's 1.7% and HughesNet's 1.0%, and SpaceX held roughly 67% of the satellite broadband market at end of 2024 per Satellite Today.
- Is it risky to join Intelsat/SES right now?
- There are real integration risks: SES's FY2025 results (March 2, 2026) came in below expectations, combined leverage sat at 3.9x EBITDA against a sub-3x target, and the fleet carries recurring failure risk after the uninsured Intelsat-33e total loss on October 19, 2024.
